I know we've had posts about this before... we are considering buying a toddler bed for GK for Christmas, but I'm concerned it may be a little early to actually take him out of the crib. At what age did you switch?
We still have DD in her crib. I plan to keep her in it as long as she is not climbing out of it. Whenever that starts we will convert to the toddler bed.
Allie ~ 01/26/09 ~ 7 lbs, 9 oz ~ 20.75 in.
& Amelia ~ 03/16/11 ~ 8 lbs, 1 oz ~ 21 in.
We switched K at around 17 months. She is a BIG climber and easily crawled out of her crib, out of the pack in play, over baby gates.... she opens doors now... she's our little houdini.
K's crib is a transitional crib and the front of it came off and was replaced by a toddler bed bar that came with the bed. She's done remarkably well with it and still goes to bed super easy, although naptime has become a lot more difficult.
I would say you can go ahead and get him the toddler bed, but wait until he is crawling out of the crib (or until baby #2 comes along) before switching him. The only reason we switched K so early was because she wouldn't stay in her crib and we were worried she would get hurt.

Avery was 19 months old. It was after our beach trip when she refused to sleep in her crib after sleeping in a king size bed alone for a week. Lol. We moved her to a full size bed since we had one in our guest room.
If you're going to buy a bed I would suggest buying a twin or even a full with rails. Toddler beds use crib size mattresses and IMO kids grow ou of them faster than it's worth having the bed.
Avery can crawl out her bed. But has only done it once. She has done remarkably well. And. To make it better for us, we can use her crib for Ryan and she hasn't had to feel like we took soemthing away from her.
Good luck!!!
Lyla's crib is transitional. We decided to move her right at age 2. She wasn't climbing out but we felt it was a good time. She did very well and we haven't really had any problems! I am now ready to move her to the full size position but haven't bought a mattress yet. Maybe for Christmas...
