Sciatica sufferers join in!

I've had herniated disk and sciatica for a month. I was out on disability leave for 3 weeks for SEVERE pain.  It had almost  healed, or so I thought, but then this weekend it came back full force. My legs are numb today and tingly and my arms are tingly too. My whole body aches and is SO tight. I feel like I got beat up. I don't know if it's fibromyalgia or just nerve pain all over. It's so bad sometimes I throw up from the pain and have a hard time teaching 1st grade like this.

Nothing helps when it's pinched like this and nothing helps release my other achy muscles. I tried tylonel, heating pad, bath, bengay, ect.

I'm wondering if chiro/massage/exercise like yoga would help? My doc does not rec. chiroprators during preg. I have never exercised a day in my life and tried yoga once and couldn't do it! Just wondering WHAT will help b/c I'm willing to try anything. I'm calling doc again tomorrow although she has pretty  much told me that there is nothing else they can do for me. I can't imagine the baby getting bigger and this getting worse. I have had a HORRIBLE preg. so far and just need some type of relief!

IDEAS???

  • Walking is good for sciatica, but with your other issues, I have no idea if that would be a good idea. I'm really sorry you're in so much pain! I hope you can find something. Nerve pain is the worst, there isn't anything that makes it feel better and it takes so long to heal. :(

  • I had alot of success with a belly support brace thingy last pregnancy. I wore it from week 24 to 30 and my sciatica was gone, never came back even though I obviously got bigger.
  • I have two slipped disks in my back with a pinched scatica I find that walking in a swimming pool is great relief from such pain because in water you are weightless. I would just walk for a few minutes. It is amazing how well you will feel afterwards. Good Luck! :)

  • I don't have any disk problems but during my last pregnancy, I had awful sciatica starting at about 24 weeks.   Walking helped a bit, but it felt jarring on my hips (yes, b/c they decided to hate me, too and hurt all the time).

Someone actually recommended....I can't believe I admit this....a Tony Little Gazelle.  I think I got it on Craigslist for like $30.  It helped me to stretch my quad muscles with no impact on my hips or knees.  I did it for about 15 mins every night in front of the TV and it felt amazing!    I know there are other brands of the same machine, too.

  • Have you considered seeing a physical therapist?  I saw one for mine, and it did amazing things!  Lots of stretching and strengthening exercises that you can do while pregnant.  Insurance usually pays for quite a bit with a doctor's referral.  A friend of mine also used tiger balm and said it helped.  I don't know much about it or it's safety, so I'd ask a doctor.  Hope you find something that helps.

  • I have been having this problem for about two months now. I noticed that when ever I walk or do yoga that it reduces the amount of pain that I'm in.

  • I have a sciatic problem and unfortunately walking makes it a lot worse so I haven't been able to get in very much exercise.  I do go to the chiropractor though and that helps SO MUCH.  My chiro has a lot of experience in pregnant women and my doc said it was fine.  If you are worried tho I would try physical therapy instead and swimming if you can.
