Babies: 6 - 9 Months

...shoe question

Ok; so my MIL has a boner for making my child wear shoes at all times and it makes me nuts....my DS almost always has socks on, but I only put shoes on him when it's cold out (which isn't often here in Houston Tx)... What do y'all do? And if you do have LO in shoes, what kind? Rubber/leather soles etc...?

TIA

Re: ...shoe question

  • DD has a pair of vans, converse, and some sesame street shoes. We don't make her wear then because she is always kicking them off.

    DD#1 is 3! And LO#2 is on his/her way! Due Feb 26th, 2014.

BFP#1: EDD 5/7/2010 born on 5/20/2010. A little girl named Emily.

    BFP#2: m/c 10/29/2012 EDD was 6/21/2012 Baby Hope was 6 weeks 3 days.

BFP#3: Twin B stopped growing at 8 weeks and 5 days. Found on 8/10/2014. EDD was 2/26/2014. Twin A is still doing great and due date is 2/26/14.

  • DD had a few pairs of shoes, but I only put them on every once in awhile. Mostly for pictures.

  • I read somewhere that, at this age, their feet aren't really "made" for shoes. Maybe better to wait to closer to the walking stage? But what do I know!? DS has never had a pair of shoes on - he'll be 7 months tomorrow.
  • My kid only wears socks...
  • she has never worn shoes, and its cold here. I put socks on when its cold.
  • I work at a childrens shoe store so he has a few pair. I put them on when we go some where and its chilly outside. He has 2 pairs of Robeez and 1 pair of Pedipeds. I do not put them on him all the time though.

  • I got a pair of Robeez soft soled shoes for 4 bucks at a consignment shop and will be buying him the next size of that brand or the Bobux brand.

  • Thanks ladies...I don't know why she's all over my case. She's making me BSC Every time she watches him (2X a week) She makes these snotty comments about him not wearing shoes and just socks...ugh. But again this is the same lady who thinks buying an old carseat from a garage sale is a great idea...sigh

    THIS

Today was the first snow but she only wears socks. I plan to get her first pair of shoes for Christmas. She will be around 9 months old then.

  • DS started wearing shoes when he started consistently pulling off his socks.
    Oy with the poodles already!

  • I'm a podiatrist (foot doc)...from a medical viewpoint, infants don't need to wear shoes in order to walk.  Walking barefoot allows them to learn how to use all their muscles correctly, learn to grip the ground, etc.  There's also no difference in whether or not they wear soft shoes or hard shoes - just any decent shoe with good support.  I only put DS in shoes if we go out, and just because it's cold here and I don't want his feet getting chilly.
  • I love shoes, but IMO, baby shoes are a bit ridiculous.  Ours wear socks, and when it gets cold out, we will use a blanket to cover them up.  I don't plan on having them wear shoes until they are walking and actually need them.

Interesting. We always tell our customers that a flexible soft shoe is better for new walkers. Is this not true?

The old-school, high-top shoes that most of us probably wore are too rigid and restrict ankle motion, which a LO needs to learn how to walk.  Soft, flexible shoes are lighter, which makes walking easier (on one hand).  On the other, a more supportive shoe makes the foot heavier, but makes LO more stable when they walk.  I usually tell my patients with LO's to just let them walk barefoot and skip the soft shoes.  When they're really cruising, move to a more "normal" shoe.

Well that is basically what we say. I usually recommend a light weight "walking" shoe like Stride Rite or Jumping Jack once they are taking steps. Before that I say something like a sock or barefoot.

    Thanks for the info :)

  • The only shoes that Bryce has are a pair of baby Uggs that I just bought him. He wore them once though because he kept kicking them off. I'll have him wear them more often once it starts snowing.
