Babies on the Brain

What kind of Dr. do I find?

My husband and I are going to try to conceive starting in January. I want to go see a doctor before hand to get a physical, do blood work, and just make sure everything with me is ok. I just moved to a new state, so I don't have a doctor or anything here. And to be honest, I never really had a regular doctor in my old state either. I just went where I could get in.

My question is, what kind of doctor do I find? Do OB/GYN's just do baby stuff? Do I just find a gynecologist? It would be great if I could find a doctor now (before pregnancy) and stay with her throughout pregnancy and even after. What kind of doctor would that be?

I'm sorry if this sounds completely stupid but I don't have anyone to ask here and google is just annoying, no info seems correct. TIA.

  • A family doctor can do all the above as well as an OB/GYN.

  • I would find a family doctor.  No need to pay a specialist copay at this point.

  • You could go with an OB/GYN or a family practitioner. Look at your co-pays and see if there is a difference. If you're healthy and you think you'll use your GYN more, lot's of insurances will let you have a GYN as your primary care Dr. I've had my GYN as my only Dr for years, but recently switched to a family practice because I ended up going for more than BC & such.

Any Dr can do a basic pre-conception check-up. Also, start taking prenatal vitamins.

    For obvious reasons.

  • FYI, the "GYN" in "OB/GYN" stands for gynecologist.
