Horseback Riding

Hi ladies! I have a question!

I'm am avid horseback rider for the past 10 years, and own two horses. Now, my doctor told me that it was alright for me to contiune riding my horses, but my friend who is 21 weeks now, is not allowed to ride, no matter what.

The books I read say yes, riding is a good form of exercise, where as online research say its a big no-no.

So, what is your intake on this? I'm thinking about retalking to my doctor about this again as I'm 15 weeks now, and have too much stress on my mind. Thank you!

Re: Horseback Riding

  • I would go off what your doctor says and what you are comfortable doing.  If you don't feel comfortable I wouldn't risk it.  But if your doctor is okay with it and you feel comfortable with it I see no reason not too!

Sorry I am not too helpful  : )

  • I've been riding for 29 years and have a paint gelding that I love.  My doctor said no to riding even in the beginning.  DH also requested I don't ride just in case in the very rare chance I fall off.  I hate it because I use to ride 4 days a week but I've worked to hard to get pregnant to risk it.  So now Roy just gets lots of ground work, and is very clean.  I bought Parelli stuff so I can work on ground games, etc.
  • It's not the riding itself that is a problem, it is the risk of falling. Several of my friends have ridden through their ninth month and had no problems. Conversely, I have a friend who fell in the hunt field and lost a baby at 7 months. It depends on what you're comfortable with. I'll probably ride my hunter through the first tri (maaaaaaybe with a little ace since he's hot), but I certainly had second thoughts last month when my friend's in-excellent-condition stirrup leather broke and she spent a week in the ICU. Bottom line, if you have dead broke horses, it's a much lower risk, but ANY horse can spook or get stung by a bee and you have to be prepared to live with the consequences. Good luck!

  • Hi there

I ride cutting horses, and I got the go ahead from my Dr to continue riding as I train 5 days a week. I rode up untill 6 months preg. but keeping in mind I did not show or work cattle after 3 months preg. My mare is extremely quiet and broke, but once I got too close to the horn with my bump I felt it was time to pull the plug, because obviously a horse can spook (even if they are bomb proof) at any time, or trip etc....but go with your gut instinct, that is what I did! I couldn't wait to get back on though!! :) but it did take me 6 weeks to get back on at just the walk...takes a while for everything to heal!
Best of luck with your pregnancy!!

  • I have been riding my entire life. Before i was pregnant i hit a rodeo almost every weekend. My Dr. said since my body is so used to it that i should be fine, up until my body tells me i've had enough. I rodeo'd on my main horse up until i was 5 months pregnant (7 months now), and now i've been just focusing on ground work with my colts. So i'd listen to your doctor along with your body.
