Infertility

New here

Hi ladies,

My DH and I have been TTC for the past year, and we met with an RE last week to discuss next steps. Everything looks fine on my end, but DH has only 2% morphology, so we're deciding between trying an IUI cycle, since we have insurance coverage for that, or just going straight to IVF W/ICSE, which we don't have coverage for (although we may be able to take advantage of a study the RE is doing to offset the costs somewhat, although it will still be $$).

Since we're not really advertising this news in the 'real' world, figured it would be nice to talk about this with others going through this process-I know its going to be a difficult journey.

  • I don't know if I can welcome you since I just got here myself, but hi!! :)  We are in pretty much the same boat- everything looks ok with me, MH has 3% morphology (and also low volume).  We are meeting with an RE in 2 weeks, but his urologist (and my obgyn) have not really focused on the morph at all.  From what I'm gathering, there's a lot of differing opinions on how significant it really is.  Is your RE in NY or NJ?

Our RE is NJ (we live here now)-they say they like at least 4% for IUI, but I've also read things that say IUI can still work. I'm very curious as to what the RE will say our chances would be with IUI...

  • Have you seen Dr. Licciardi's blog? He's out of NYU, which I'd say is in the top 2 of fertility clinics in NYC.  He basically said they don't put too much stock in morphology numbers. https://infertilityblog.blogspot.com/2010/07/sperm-morphology-new-guidelines.html  Thought you might find this interesting if you haven't seen it yet :)

  • Welcome! I go in for my 1st IUI tomorrow morning. If I were in your shoes, I'd try at least one or two IUI's, since you have coverage and it's a relatively easy process/procedure. IVF will always be there if you decide to go that route. Just my two cents!
DW & I (yes, we're lesbians!) are using anonymous donor sperm and IUI TTC#1! Diagnosed with pituitary adenoma at age 16 2009: Extensive testing to find reason for irregular periods & rule out uterine cancer 10/2010: Dx possible PCOS / No Ovulation / Retroverted Uterus IUI #1 on 11/10/10 (50mg Clomid + Ovidrel trigger + Anonymous Donor Sperm) = BFN IUI #2 on 12/15/10 (50mg Clomid + Ovidrel trigger + Anonymous Donor Sperm) = BFP!!! I actually did see this during one of my Google searches-there is so much information out there, you just never know what is right!

  • I totally agree, but if the practice at NYU is really that morphology isn't a huge deal, then I tend to believe it since it is one of the top clinics in the country, kwim?
