clogged tear duct

Eliza has had a clogged tear duct since birth that still hasn't cleared up.  Is it normal for it to take this long (almost 7 weeks)?

Re: clogged tear duct

  • Juliet had one off and on for about that long...it's icky.  Are you cleaning it gently with a cloth and massaging the area?  Unfortunately that's about all you can do to help them clear up.  If you're concerned you might have your dr to a swap and check for infection...we had to with Juliet.

  • It takes a LONG time for them to clear up.  Cleaning with a warm, wet washcloth and breastmilk in the eye should take care of it over time.

  • DD had one and it also took awhile to clear up.  I put a few drops of BM on it and then massaged.  Once I started that it cleared up pretty quickly.  (I read about the BM online somewhere)

  • Yep, C's lasted several months.  I asked the pedi about it and she said they won't do anything about it the first year.  Ditto the above about the breastmilk.  We got a prescription for when it became infected but I just used my bm and it cleared right up.
  • DD's lasted a while too.  I want to say until 2 months.  We just massaged throughout the day with warm washclothes.   Our pedi said to massage more towards the nose/nasal bridge because that is were the duct actually is and do not massage right by the eyeball, if that makes any sense.  Never heard about the BM thing.
  • glad to know it's normal.  We do the BM and the massage several times a day, but it hasn't cleared it up.
  • Abby had one for quite awhile. We did the warm washcloth and bm but eventually the pedi gave us a rx to rub on her eye and it cleared it up very quickly.
