we were told today that they are going to try to extubate our LO in a couple days and put her on a SiPAP. She is getting steroids now to reduce the swelling around her tube. If she is still doing well in a couple days, they will try it and see how she does. If she doesn't do well, there is the possibility that she will be re-intubated.
This is all so new to us.. I am nervous about her being extubated, but so excited at the same time - we haven't heard her cry yet! Not that i WANT her to cry, i just want to hear her, y'know?
Did your LO's go back and forth between being intubated and another ventilator? any other thoughts?
TIA!!
Re: Ventilation Questions..
Yeah, Robbie was off the vent 3 times before finally getting it right the 4th. He was on the vent for 5w and CPAP for another 3. It's pretty common for them to go up and down. Our NICU reassured us that ANY time off the vent is good for their lungs, letting them heal etc.
Robbie made it 14 hours the first time, 36 hours the 2nd, 27 hours the 3rd. I really didn't think we'd ever lose that vent, but he finally did it.
My Blog
Ditto Trish. Evan was on and off 3 times before it stuck the 4th at 5 weeks old. The first time he was 1 1/2 days old and he only made it 1 hour 15min, the next time he made it a couple of days, the next a week, and then off for good. I can't remember how long he was on sipap/cpap, all I really cared was that he was off the vent.
GL!
My DD Lauren went thru 3 different type of vents. She was very sick..... and as PP's mentioned it takes some time...sometimes they need to go back on the vent. Lauren didn't open her eyes for 11 days.... and when they extubated her and she woke up...and cried.... I was like.... "Thank God".
I loved hearing her cry.... it told me she was trying to fight and get better.
She hated CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure). She fought that and always snorted out her nose against it.... so they put her on the nasal cannula pretty quickly. She needed her cannula for almost 3 mos. (we went home on oxygen). She's oxygen free now...and doing well. GL to you!!
