Mom to 23 weeker saying hello

Hi everyone, I just wanted to officially introduce myself.  I was on the February 2011 boards but mostly just lurked.. But I think I need a lot more  support after having our little peanut so I wanted to be a little more involved.

I gave birth to a 23w4d baby girl on 10/16.  I was in the hospital for 2 weeks before she was born after having a rescue cerclage put in for an incompetent cervix at 21w2d.  She was determined to come out though!  She was breech but delivered naturally still in the sac!  She is the only 23 weeker in the NICU (over 50 babies) so that is a little scary, but at the same time we know we are the underdogs and it makes us want to fight even harder.  Our daughter really is a fighter too and we are so thankful for every single day.  LIke everyone, we have been going through a complete roller coaster the last 3 weeks.  She has severe BPD, still intubated and had needed a lot of O2, but she got a new (bigger) tube yesterday and has been doing so so well with it.  She is doing great with her feeds (BM), no PDA or bleeds in the brain, so we are very thankful for these things.

I am really encouraged to hear all of your stories and I look forward to getting to you know all better.  Good luck to everyone here!

 Kristen

  • Congratulations on the birth of your LO Evan was the earliest/tiniest baby in our ICU as well for his entire stay (well, as he grew he wasn't the tiniest anymore). It was a long road, and got to be hard to keep watching other go home especially at the end.,The first two years were really tough, but he's currently a happy healthy 2 1/2 yr old who's on track for everything right now.

FWIW Evan was born at 23w 5 days according to my 7 week ultrasound, and 24w 5 days according to my dates, so very close to your LO.

When you're ready I'd love to talk with you about a very successful treatment for cervical incompetance I recently learned about. I know it's not something you'll probably be interested in right now.

  • Congratulations on the birth of your daughter. Keeping you and your family in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us posted.

  • Congratulations on the birth of your daughter. My ds is a 25 weeker and we are still in the NICU. It is a very long, hard road but you can do it. I will be keeping your whole family and especially your precious little girl in my t&ps.

  • Welcome, and congrats on your little fighter!

My son was born 23w5d back in the end of June, and is (hopefully) close to the end of his NICU stay.  He was on the vent for one month, CPAP for a month, and still on a small bit of oxygen support now.  The NICU is a rollercoaster, and while I hate that analogy, it is true!  Good luck and hang in there!

  • Thank you so much everyone - you are all so wonderfully supportive.

witt0198 - i would love to hear about the cervical incompetence treatment.  I definitely couldn't handle even thinking about it the last few weeks, but I have been thinking lately about what the potential is in the future (in the distant future at this point!)  Smile

  • congrats - hugs and prayers for your little one!

I have an IC too but delivered at 26w2d.  I'll be thinking of you!

  • Congratulations!

You have a long road ahead of you, but as the Mom of a healthy and thriving former 24 weeker I can assure you that miracles happen every day, even for the "underdogs". :)

Feel free to surf through my blog. It has all the documentation of DS's NICU stay and the aftermath. He was born on 3/23/08 so if you want to start there and go forward it has lots of information. Feel free to e-mail me (address on the blog's contact page) if you have any questions or need any support!
