group b strep with allergies?

my doc explained group b strep and said that if positive, i'll get penicillin automatically when i go into the hospital, well i'm extremely allergic to penicillin, and the back up medication they often use "sulfa drugs" so anyone know what'll happen after that?

Re: group b strep with allergies?

  • The hospital I work at uses clindamycin or vancomycin.  There are a number of options - based on your prescriber's preference and hospital infection control practices.

  • With our patients that are allergic to sulfa's and penicillins we usually give Clindamycin or Gentamycin. If you come back positive for GBS, then they will run a sensitivity test to see what medication is going to be the most effective treatment. HTH

  • I was GBS + with my first 2 pregnancies and am also allergic to penicillin.  I received clindamycin both times.
  • I am allergic to penicillin and sulfa drugs.  I will be getting erythromycin (sp?) when I go into labor.
