Tricare...and temp living out of state?

There is a LOT going on right now and for several reasons it appears that the 2 kids and I will be living in a different state for a bit while DH is still in KS. I know we are covered in the ER and stuff but is there a way to get covered for like a Pedi in a different state. The baby has some medical stuff going on and will need to be seen a few times while we are here for sure.

I know when you MOVE you can change regions and stuff but this is different i think. I don't need to change my address forever...just a month or 3 :)

Re: Tricare...and temp living out of state?

  • I'm wondering this too...but about OB care. My DH is getting deployed in March, and I am due July 4thish. We have been living in MD for the last couple years, but since he will be gone, I would like to have Baby #2 in FL where my family lives. Does anyone know if I can get Tricare to cover having the baby in a different state?

  • DS and I are on standard and I was told I could take him Nywhere it was accepted. I am staying with my mom right now in a different state while DH is deployed and have taken him to the pedi no problem.

  • Call Tricare and change your region.
  • If the state you are going to be living in is in a different region then you will need to change regions. I am currently in Texas visiting family (were stationed out of Campbell) and Tricare told me that if I am going to be gone more than 30 days I need to change my region.
  • I was also told that I needed to change my region when I was in a similar situation.

I kind of went through this situation May 09. We went back to DH's home state for family reasons and we were able to have DD there. I contacted Tricare before hand and they said since we were going to be in the same region (Tri-North) we didn't need to do much. I needed a referral from my PCM for a new OB where I was going to be or I could just show up at the hospital in labor and see whoever was on call. If we planned on being in the area for longer than 30 days they said I would need to get a PCM in the area. The MW I saw before I left was very military friendly (they don't have maternity on base) and made copies of my records and forwarded my GBS test results to my in-law's house. When we returned home I saw here for my follow ups. They said if I were switching regions it would require more paperwork (change PCM, region and get a new referral for an OB), but it's not that big of a deal.  Also, in my experience contacting Tricare through the 1-800# is as pain. Everyone has a different answer. I called the referral office on base and they handled everything for me and contacted the new OB late on a Friday to get my referral in for a Monday appointment. GL!

  • My boys and I are temporarily living at my parents while DH is deployed.  We transfered regions (Triwest to TriNorth).  Due to how long we were going to be in the TriNorth region we had to do portability to TriNorth.  We also had to choose new PCM's and get that approved prior to making appointments.  Outside of that, things are the same (have to get referrals for specialists, etc).  When we get back to the TriWest region (when we move back to KS), we will do portability back to TriWest and then get reassigned PCM's at the MTF.

  • Yes, just call Tricare and change your region.  They should be able to help you out.

During my first pregnancy DH was on deploment so I flew to TX to have my baby at home with my folks.  I just changed regions and was seen at the AF hospital there with no issues and delivered our son there as well.  When we went back to CA we just swapped regions again.

  • When I went back home for a month last year I had to see the Tricare rep from our hospital. She told me that if you will be away from your home for more than 30 days that you are suppose to switch regions.
