Funny Story Re: SD

SD is really getting into reading.  We have been having a hard time getting her to branch out into reading different types of books, she has read Nancy Drew the easier books, but she is almost constantly reading Hannah Montana or High School Musical.  We are VERY pleased that she has found a series she can get into but are really trying to push her to read something with a little more depth (yes she is in 3rd grade but is reading on an upper 4th grade almost  5th grade reading level.

So this weekend we were at the beach and I forgot to tell SD to bring a book with her.  My MIL/FIL rode in the car with us down there and my MIL had a book she was reading (James Patterson...yeah) well SD picked it up and started reading it - she is now on chapter 15!  We went to the flea market and found a bunch of other books, Little House on the Prarie, Little Women etc but NO SD only wanted to read James Patterson...so MIL gave SD the book.  SD's reasoning is because it is both a murder and a mystery.

I know that there are better books SD can be reading and I am hoping that now we are at home she will go back to Hannah Montana (I guess you should be careful what you wish for!)

  • Ok, yes, it's bad, but I TOTALLY got into reading by reading romance novels starting in 4th grade.  WHY my mother let me read them, I have no idea, but my love of reading totally took off.  SO - I suppose its not the end of the world?

My kids have all gone gaga over the Series of Unfortunate Events books, and maybe she'd like the Harry Potters?  (They're a little hard for her, but maybe ok).  And, in a couple of years, totally the Twilight series.

  • Here's the thing and probably makes her reading choice even funnier, she is afraid of the Harry Potter series (books & movies), as well as Unfortunate Events - she says the magic scares her - however a murder book isn't so scary(?)!

  • If she likes mysteries, which I did when I was young and still do, try The Bobbsey Twins or Trixie Belden (which was my absolute favorite!). I now read James Patterson.

But another set of books that I LOVED was the "Shoe" books by Noel Streatfield: Ballet Shoes, Tennis Shoes, Theater Shoes.... I even re-read them when I got into college. Fantastic books for girls.

  • I recently gave her one of the Bobbsey Twins books - it is sitting on her desk in her room...she didn't seem that interested.  The Shoe books - I have heard of these but haven't seen them, and I haven't heard of Trixie Belden either - I guess I need to visit Amazon.com...Hmmm
  • You can find out all about them here:

I'd read 'em all again today, if I had them! Wink

  • It's great she's picking up reading as a hobby!  Good job, mom!

  • I was all about my mom's Mary Higgins Clark books at her age.

I would start her on the Anne of Green Gables series.  LOVED THEM at her age.

  • I also loved Mary HIggins Clark, but I think it was more like 8th or 9th grade at that point.  I don't know that I'd be thrilled at my 3rd grader reading murder mysteries.  I wouldn't let them watch CSI at that age, so I highly doubt I'd be pleased with them reading about murder!  Lol....  I'm weird.

This post reminded me how much I used to love Dorothy Keddington books.  They are mystery / romance, but the author is LDS (Mormon) so the romance aspect of it is very clean.  They are SOOO good!  They are hard to find, though, but your library might have them.

Here's a link to Amazon for them, but it looks like the books must be out of print.  There's a bunch of used ones for sale.  Hmmm...  I might buy some!

  • I agree about not being thrilled I would MUCH rather her reading something more age appropriate, I also don't want to curb her interest in reading books similar to this.  I will look at te Dorthy Keddington books and I looked online for some of the other books mentioned.  This has all been such a surprise it caught me off guard.
  • I was going to say Mary Higgins Clark, too, but I think it was more 5th grade.  Most of them are pretty dark for a young kid, so I don't think I'd steer her to those.

I also got into reading biographies.  I hear Miley Cyrus has one coming out.  Stick out tongue

  • See, my mom held to the belief of "I don't care what she's reading so long as she's reading" theory of life.  If the book was advanced/had adult content. we discussed it, asked my opinions about it, asked if I had questions, etc., but she would never tell me NOT to read something becuase it was not "age appropriate."  I'm also the geek that did a book report on "Gone With the Wind" in the sixth grade.  I was that annoying reader.

Maybe this explains why I have read each and every book by Judy Blume :-)

  • I read "Gone With the Wind" in 6th grade, too. And was pissed that the girl who read "Little Women" got as much credit as I did. Hmm
  • I read Agatha Christie in elementary school, just a few that my mom thought were more appropriate for my age.

If she likes mysteries, maybe she could try The Cat Who series.  I loved those as a kid too and was really into them.  And Nancy Drew like you said is always good.
