Nursing clothes - necessary?

And how do you even buy them not knowing what size you will be?

They kinda seem like just another darn thing to buy to me...

Re: Nursing clothes - necessary?

  • I didn't find them necessary at all, but some things are helpful.  I like the nursing tanks and will probably get a few of those, but not much else.

  • I know nursing bras are a def. yes. My friend also used nursing tank tops and she liked that a lot. As for size, I really don't know either! Im a 38D now so I'll just get that size and hope for the best.
  • I bought a few of the long sleeve hooded T-shirts from ON when they are on sale because they were a good price, and I am wearing them now, so even if I am not able to nurse I am getting some use out of them.

  • Totally unnecessary.  I bought a few with DS and used them the first month or two, then realized regular shirts are just as easy (if not more so!)

  • Nah, but they do make life easier, especially if you don't relish the idea of lifting up your whole shirt in public - LOL.  I didn't have a whole nursing wardrobe per se, but a few tanks and easy/access (wrap) shirts were helpful. And definitely the bras. Worth the investment.
  • I always say that you only need a couple nursing tanks to wear under your regular clothes. It will give you the coverage that you may want for your belly (which is what I want), turning almost any regular shirt into a "nursing top".

You will probably just have to alter some normal things you wear. I could never wear really tight fitting shirts and obviously dresses are mostly out. I always needed to wear a nursing bra, so halter tops were out as well.

Nursing tanks are pretty safe to buy before the baby is born - just make sure you have a little extra room in the top.

  • I've never used nursing clothes, but can see where they'd be helpful.  I always just wore a shirt that I could pull up or unbutton and I threw a receiving blanket over us most of the time.  It's one of those purchases that can wait until after baby is here.  If, after a couple of weeks, you think you'll be more comfy NIP w/ a nursing shirt, then it may be worth buying a couple.
  • I waited until after DD was born and made sure the BF would work for us and also to see how big the "girls" were going to get then went to Target and bought a few tanks. I wore them everyday under or with everything. They're pretty cheap and were helpful for me.
  • Other than bras, I don't think they'll be necessary, Button down shirts, etc. should do the trick.
  • Nursing bras at the VERY least are great to have on hand.I'll probably buy one before thebaby and then buy more asmymilk comes in. I'm going toget acouple of tanks too for PP. I survived without the tanks with my DS though.
  • I BF'ed Ellie for ayear and never really needed nursing clothes.  She was born in the spring so I wore a lot of regualr tanks adn slid my arm out when I needed to.  As the weather got colder, I jsut layered appropraitely so I wouldn't be flashing anyone if I had to nurse Ellie in a public place.  IMO, nursing specific clothes are ugly!
