Okay, I'm definitely going to ask my OB about this tomorrow at my appointment, but I might be more inclined to trust my bff from college than my OB. I'm wondering if anyone else has heard of this and what you guys think.
My bff from college is a naturopathic doctor, and she's studied here and in China, universities fly her in to teach this stuff, but since I'm pregnant, I'm not sure what to do--normally I just listen to her and do what she says.
Anyway, there's this theory that if you had an abusive childhood or a lot of trauma growing up--PTSD, anxiety, etc., that your adrenal glands have been overworked. So you've been living in fight or flight your whole life. The theory is that when your fetus/baby starts producing adrenaline, your body will automatically take their adrenaline. She has her clients who've had pasts like this take adrenal supplements while they're pregnant.
She said that these studies weren't out when she was expecting her son (who is now six) and if they had been, she would have taken the supplements. And then she pointed out symptoms her son has that she thinks would have been prevented if she'd known this back then--flat footedness, lung development issues.
Ideas? What do you guys think?

I have never heard of this, so I tried to look it up in our university journal database and couldn't find anything.
Basically, I wouldn't. It boils down to the fact that "adrenaline" is actually epinephrine and is a stimulant. You aren't supposed to take stimulants while pregnant (not even Pseudoephedrine).
Without seeing the actual data and scientific double blind placebo based studies I would not do this. Unless, of course, my doctor prescribed it because I would assume that s/he had read up on the research.
ManiacMcGee,
I was totally hoping you would see this and respond :-) That was my gut feeling, too, but my friend has grad degrees in chem and biochem, THEN went into the naturopathic stuff, so I'm never sure what to think. I mean, *I* certainly don't know this stuff...
It was just when she did the whole, "I certainly would have done this when I was expecting my son" that I felt swayed and thought I would put it out there to the board.
Thanks!
