Need gift ideas - shower for preemie

Hello,

 This weekend I will be attending a shower for a friend with a precious preemie. Are there any baby items that have been especially helpful to have for preemie babies? I want to purchase a gift that will be as helpful to the baby and her parents as possible. The baby was born at 27 weeks gestation and is still in the NICU (at this point we still have no idea when the baby will be able to come home although she is doing well). Any suggestions?

    Preemie clothes are nice but by the time DD wore clothes, she was almost in NB outfits so if you know that the parents do not have as many NB outfits, that may be a good idea.

    Otherwise, certificates for restaurants near the hospital are fantastic.  It is so hard to say if there are any specific things for the child because each preemie has their own health challenges.

    A friend of our gave us a gift card to a nice resturant and fandango bucks. It was nice to be able to go out to eat and see a movie and pretend that life was normal for a bit. Did she register anywhere? If so, check that out, I was so thankful when people got us things that we had registered for and actually needed rather than clothes and blankets.

    I would do a mixture of things that she can use now in the nicu and things for later. She will need everything that a term baby needs eventually.  Things for now could include gas cards, preemie outfits, a nicu journal, recieving blankets.  For later look at her registry or choose the things that you used the most as a new mother.

    I second (third?) gift cards to restaurants for mom and dad. I would also think about heading to a store that has developmental/educational toys and talking to one of the people that worked there about some early sensory development items. DD had a hard time grasping objects until someone got us an O Ball- probably the world's greatest gift at the time.

    Does the mom even want a shower?  I'm just speaking from my NICU experience.... the last thing on my mind was a shower.  It can be a very stressful time on Moms and Dads/familes....being in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.  I mention this because my DH had a friend who kept pushing us to have a shower.  She was trying to be nice, but we were very stressed out during the 5 weeks at the hospital.

    The only thing during our NICU days we needed was rest, lots of prayers....and food.  The gift cards for food/restaurants the PP mentioned sound nice.
