Fitted for a bridesmaid dress :(

I went today with my friend to get fitted for her wedding.  We have to order the dress by Feb so lets face it I'll be huge by then.  The wedding is in Sept so I'll have four months to lose a little weight. I usually wear a size 16 and my jeans still fit and our actually loose.  They measured me and said I need a size 20 :( ! I think they are nuts! But it was still very sad moment.  I'm ok with gaining weight as long as baby's healthy but really at 14 weeks! Just a vent...anyone else in a wedding post baby?

Re: Fitted for a bridesmaid dress :(

  • First of all, bridemaid gowns are always ridiculously off a size or two from what you usually wear. Secondly, better to have to whittle down and take things in as needed, than to let it out and hope there is enough fabric.

Don't get down on yourself!! It will all work out :)

  • Yes. In September. I'm ordering a size up from what I was and being prepared to take the thing in for quick alterations a week or two before. Keep in mind you can still have it taken in! Don't take a size 20 as a sentence that you'll actually be that size after all is said and done. If you are, who cares, you'll have an infant! If you lose weight, be proud when you have to take it in for nips and tucks at the seams!

Are you planning to breast feed? BFing is one of the most fabulous ways to lose weight after pregnancy. I gained 70 lbs with DD and between BFing for a few months and a strict diet from my dietician, I lost 55 of it in 3 months.

  • I will be in a wedding in June... talk about leftover baby fat RIGHT AWAY!!! I am being measured in a month. And since I'm a costume designer, I can tell you that wedding dresses, bridesmaid dresses, and patterns are all on a copletely different scale. I am a 4 in real world, and a 10 in bride land - so don't worry about the number worry about the fit!

I am planning on BFing as well to get those pounds off - being careful and steady about putting them on, too!

  • I was MOH in my sister's wedding 10 weeks after DD was born. I ordered the dress a size bigger than I normally wear. The biggest issue I had was that I was nursing and my boobs were gigantic. I do look a bit "fluffier" than normal in the pictures, but I got a lot of compliments on how good I looked post-baby. Little did they know how many types of Spanx I had under my dress!
  • Don't worry about the size! wedding and bridesmaids' dress sizes are always smaller that real sizes.  I don't know why, they just are (we didn't actually get a reason for that in fashion school)

I may be in a wedding a few weeks after this babe is born, but my brother has yet to solidify the date and location...if they do it near me (where we grew up) it may even be only days after, or even before, the birth.  No dresses picked out yet either, but I know that my bro's fiance is into really simple and practical stuff.

  • Don't worry one bit about the size!!!  And in all likelihood, if you nurse, you'll be thankful for some extra room up top, and then probably need to do alterations everywhere else--but it's always easier to take in than out, and that way you won't put too much pressure on yourself.  Don't worry, you'll practically still have a newborn--other moms will understand, and the rest of them can stuff it, LOL.

  • bm dresses are small to begin with

when I was 4 months pp I was about 10-15lbs from my normal weight.  I did BF so that helped lose a lot of weight.

  • I am dreading getting fitted!  I'm in a wedding 6 weeks after my due date, so even if I don't go "over-due," that's still pushing it.  It's so hard never having been through this before, because I really have no idea how fast the weight is going to come off!  Just more incentive for me to really watch the weight gain throughout the next few months, I guess.

  • For some nutso reason, wedding dresses and bridesmaid dresses are sized two sizes above your normal size.  So if you're normally a size 16, it makes sense they'd size you at 20.  I have no idea what idiot decided that was a good idea, but don't worry, it doesn't mean you're really a size 20 :)

  • My SIL is getting married a month after I have the baby. Thankfully, we already discussed that I help somewhere else in the wedding. I believe I will be taking care of my other two SILs infants with my own who are in the wedding. As theirs will be 6 months old and three months old.

  • Thanks all! I know its all my out of wack hormones.  I am planning on BFing so I'm glad to hear that helps! Just got to watch my weight gain and hope for the best :) I figured going bigger was better so I could alter it down.

  • I wear a size 10-12 in real life and for a wedding this past July (I wasn't even pregnant yet) they had to order me a 18... I was so embarrassed! But it fit great in the end... don't stress about it! :)
  • I'm the exact same size as you and also had to order a 20 for a February wedding.  I feel humongous.  When I picked it up, I didn't even bother to try it on.  My wedding is when I'll be pregnant, but I totally understand your pain!
  • Seriously, the ONE place that should have vanity sizing...

  • I am in a wedding Sept as well.  I'm almost 13 weeks and nothing really fits me anymore.  Don't worry about sizing!  Wedding/ bridesmaid dress sizing is nuts like many girls said.  I saw that myself with my own wedding gown.  I had to order 4 sizes larger than I wear in real life.
  • Bridal Wear is Sized So Terribly! Last time I was in a wedding, I had to buy a dress 4 sizes larger than I usually wear (and I wasn't pregnant!) It is so upsetting. Why can't they run normal sizes????

Honestly, don't stress. I am sure you will look beautiful! And you will have a beautiful new mommy glow!!!

  • I am due May 8 and in a wedding on May 21. Hoping baby is NOT late, as the wedding is 2 weeks after my due date. I ordered a dress and am hoping it will fit.
  • Bridesmaids dresses always run like 2 sizes bigger than what you normally wear.

I'm due May 5th and am in my brother's wedding July 16th.
