Are there any heartburn suffers out there?

I am DYING.  It feels like I have a flame thrower throughout my chest, up my esophagus, and in my throat.  I cringe every time I feel a burp coming on.  Every food that causes heartburn is irritating it.  I have tried to stay away from the triggers such as tomatoes, chocolate, onions, carbonated drinks and other gassy foods, but I am dying.

Did anyone find any relief in anything?  This keeps me up all night.  My morning sickness went away only to be replaced by this :(

  • Tums and Milk have helped me. I get heartburn with everything including water!

  • I had awful heartburn with DS in 3rd tri.  I took Tums for temporary relief and my doctor okayed Zantac to prevent the heartburn from happening

Also, try to eat small, frequent meals.  Eating and drinking too much at once always trigger very painful flare ups.  Oh, and I'd sleep in a chair if it was too much at night

  • My last pg I had it REALLY bad.  I brought TUMS with me everywhere and they really did help.  Didn't make it 100% go away, but made it hurt a lot less.  (I had to get the berry ones, cause they were the only ones I could stomach!)

  • Pureed papaya worked for me. I am not a big drug person. My MW recommended it. I found it at a vitamin store. It came in little tubes. It was wonderful.

Yes, Tums and Rolaids are safe.  I found the soft-chew Rolaids or Tums to be the most effective (and most yummy).

That sinks :( I also suffer from GERD, but I have surprisingly been having little to no symptoms during pregnancy while off my prevacid.

Tums are safe to take. I want to ask my dr if I can take Gaviscon (chewable caplets similar to Tums) in case I do start getting heartburn. Pre-pregnancy, they were the only chewables that gave me relief. Like I said, I don't know that those are ok during pregnancy or not, but it might be worth looking in to.

I also found chewing gum to be helpful. I know the mint does bother some people, but for me it helped.

Really, just avoid those foods. Believe me, I know how hard it is ( I've had pizza once in the last year!). But it's just not worth it to deal with the heartburn later.

  • I am late to the party, as usual, but I wanted to drop in and say that I have found eggnog to relieve my heartburn a little bit.  You can only have store-bought, or home-made if the eggs are heated enough in the making, but it has worked for me. I have heard of it working for others as well, so it could be worth a try.  Sorry you are dealing with this. It stinks.
  • My doctor said over the counter Prevacid is okay for me. I was eating tums like they were my last meal. The Prevacid has made the heartburn non-existant.
