I'm in the market for my first mom car and would very much
appreciate any and all suggestions. I'm not ready to spring for a mini
van. Not yet, anyway.
It'll just be me and LO most of the time,
but I'll need room in the cargo area for my two dogs as well (an 80 lb.
lab and a 45 lb. lab/beagle mix). Ideally, I'd like to avoid a huge
SUV, but it seems that many of the crossovers don't have much for cargo
space. Does anyone have a vehicle that they love (or just really like)
and would recommend?
Re: Mom Car Suggestions?
We're getting a Honda CRV which will be great for my one big dog, not sure how it would do with two. I'd see if you can get a full day test run so you can see how your dogs fit.
I've got friends who just got a Ford Edge and really like it, it's a good price for the size.

I drive a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and didn't have a problem until it hit 100,000 miles. Now, i hate it and get nervous about it breaking down all the time. It has reeeeally screwy electrical problems.
I'm currently lusting over the Lexus hybrid SUV. But, since we bought our house in July and have a baby on the way in three months, I don't know how in the world we could swing adding a car payment since both our cars (his is a VW jetta) are paid off. Good luck and let us know what you decide on!
I love my PT Cruiser... I bought it specifically for room for the three dogs (two small and one medium size) plus room for the baby and some baby gear. They look small but have a shocking amount of room inside.
I was originally looking for a Nissan Murano (drove an Altima at the time) so I'm also thirding that suggestion - love them!
My dad has a Toyota Matrix and I ADORE IT! It's relatively cheap (he paid $16,000 for it, but he's super good at bargaining his cars!), it's sporty, I LOVE the space in the back for the huge Kolcraft Contours double I had at the time AND groceries, and it fit very well the 2 car seats I had and will also fit in my 3 car seats, and I liked how easy it was to manuever. It wa sa zippy lil thing!
Of course, I have a Dodge Grand Caravan, so I do have a mom van.
But, when fmaily comes to visit, we all fit in one vehicle so it's awesome! And SO spacious.
I currently drive a Mazda CX-7 which I love. Its a crossover so it drives like a car and still has plenty of room. I've had both my dogs (60 and 70 lbs) in the back and they were fine, although they are good travellers. I dont think I could fit both dogs and stroller in the back though. It gets pretty good mileage, looks good, and is affordable.
I've also had a Mercury Mariner - which was a great small SUV but I didnt like that it drove more like a truck than a car. However, my DH loved it for that reason so its a personal preference. (I'm not sure if they still make them or not, the Escape is the same car, the Mariner just has all the extras/better interior, etc.)
DH had a Durango for the last 5 years that he loved, I hated driving it - again becuase of the truck vs car thing - but I was switching from Mustang/Miata/Accord to Durango. It was a big difference in handling and size. It had tons of room for whatever we needed but it did go through gas like crazy. Although not as bad as the F-150 he now drives.
My mom has a Nissan Rogue -- its almost identical to my CX-7 but I could get more for my money with the Mazda as far as features and I used to work for Ford so I still get a discount on Mazdas. The Rogue is a great car too. I think if I was going that route though, I would go with the Murano just to have a bit more space, especially if I intended to keep it for the next 5 or so years.

I also recently purchased a RAV-4 and I am happy with the space.. lots of trunk room and room for my 2 beagles. The carseat fits fine for me, but when DH is driving, he has to scoot his seat forward which is a little uncomfortable for him. I would highly suggest taking carseats into the dealership with you and make sure you can both fit! This has been an issue for many friends of mine
Good luck!
I have a 2008 Ford Edge and I absolutely LOVE it! Rides great and has tons of room in the back seat for a car seat and two people. We put our three dogs in the trunk and they seem to be comfortable back there too. Highly recommend it to anyone - and the new 2011 models are to die for!
This! We just bought ours a few months ago and LOVE it. The keyless entry is awesome (don't even have to take the keys out of my purse to unlock it) and so is the push button start. It's very roomy but not too big. We have three dogs and they fit great in the very back.
If we weren't having 3 we would get a Honda Pilot lots of room when you fold down the 3rd row. But when you have 3 kids around 2 yrs apart and they are all in 5 point harness carseats you get to drive a mini van or giant suburban. We are going the mini van route for many reasons.
