  • I would recommend going back through posts on this board - there are dozens of CD posts every single day.  People talk about what they like and what they don't like.  When I was researching, I also got a lot of helpful information from Green Mountain Diapers.  The DIaper Pin is another good site.  Other people like Abby's Lane, Nicki's Diapers, Kelly's Closet, Jillian's Drawers, etc.  They are all online stores, but also have information.

You can also check out the blog maintained by some of the girls on this board.

Also, see FAQ #4 for a summary of the basic types of diapers.

  • I found this site today and thought it might be helpful:

  • After doing some research, I recommend doing the Jillian's Drawers trial so that you can experience a number of different kinds of diapers.  I'm always amazed that there some people's least favorite diapers are my favorites and vice versa.  It's a good idea to be open minded and see what works for you and what fits LO best.

  • I reccomend a cloth diaper trial. I know when you're pregnant it's easy to get overwhelmed by so many options, and while research is great you really don't know how a particular brand will fit your particular baby! (A few times I've found what I thought would be the "perfect" diaper for us, loved the reviews, and got one and it was a terrible fit for us!)

They are offered by several companies and some googling will find a ton. Here's a good example: Jillian's Drawers Trial. This way you can actually see how several brands of diapers fits your baby and what you like best.

Every kid is shaped differently and my stash might not work for you. For us, a streamlined stash is: newborn stage: 24 Green Mountain Diapers in orange, 2 Snappis, 5-6 Covers (Thirsties Duo Wraps in size 1). We trifolded but this way you could also snappi if you're feeling ambitious.

From 11 pounds onward: 10 Bumgenius Elementals (these work great when they're bigger but not so well at first. They are an organic cotton AIO), 10 Bumgenius 4.0 pockets, 10 Bumgenius Freetimes (these are a stay-dry AIO).  We purchased mostly used from Spot's Corner (or from here!) also used Sunbaby Pocket Diapers or Kawaii (cheap Chinese diapers) for a good and inexpensive stash-filler.

    Good luck!

  • The jillians drawers trial looks perfect!
  • My local CD store has a class called CD 101.  See if you have local store and if they offer something like this.  It's really helpful to see products first hand.

  • There is a 7-part series on Youtube that we often recommend to people who are in the initial stages of learning about cloth diapers.

  • I'm doing a trial from itsybitsybums.com.  They are located where I live, but they ship all over.  They have 3 trials to choose from, or you can create your own if you have an idea of what you want to try!

  • First take a deep breath and relax! Remember these are just diapers - they catch poop and pee!

Write down your reasons you want to cloth diaper and prioritize them.

Learn the terminology: all in one, all in two, pocket, hybrid, prefold, flat, cover, PUL, wool.

Compare your priorities with the different types if diapers!

Cost: lowest cost are prefold, flats, and OS options can save $$. (Most are one size though)

Ecofriendliness: natural fibers cotton, hemp and wool (I don't consider bamboo a Eco friendly fiber - google to find out why)

Convenience: do you want to fold or stuff, would you prefer one piece? Dry time - do you want the wash dry time to be quick? Or could you wait? Natural fibers can take longer in an aio type. You don't want to dry PUL or elastic all.the.time so the diapers last longer.

There are other considerations for sure. But each family has different priorities - so each family has a different cloth diaper stash!
