In a perfect world I would be able to make my baby's food. However I do not have the time, the patience, nor the appliances to do so at this point. I am not starting food until after the 6 month mark, and we will take it one step at time.
However in the mean time I want to educate myself on all the different kinds of baby food out there. I am totally overwhelmed. Please give me the down and dirty on particular brands, organic vs "natural" vs "regular", and your opinion.
I have thought about BWL, and while I feel like I am doing a modified version with purees, I still want to follow her lead with what she feels comfortable with. I am not comfortable giving her non purees right off the bat, but will explore soft foods like bananas and avocados when it feels right.
Sorry if this seems like a post and run, but I am exhausted and need to seriously crash.
Re: Talk to me about organic purees
Hey there...I will be honest I never had even the slightest desire to make baby food! I was stuck on BLW but Noah had other plans so when we began purees I used Ella's kitchen and Earth's Best. I also tried Happy Baby (endorsed by Dr.Sear's) but found that there aren't that many flavours available and the added chia seed made him constipated.
I also use Beechnut quite often, it's not organic but I really like it because of the consistency.
I never had any desire to make my own babyfood so used the store bought organic brands. The cheapest and easiest to find brand is Earth's Best. You can get it at Target and in most major grocery stores. Safeway has an organic store brand which we've used as well. I've also bought Ella's Kitchen, Happy Baby, Sprout and Plum Baby. I've found Ella's Kitchen at Target but had to order the others online. (although I think you can buy them at Whole Foods) My main disappointment with storebought baby food is that there are very few green vegetable options. There are plenty of combinations of different fruits and non-green vegetables but not green vegetables.
I noticed that too. Especially since DS looooves peas and green beans. Green veggies seem to be hard to find. We did a combo of BLW and purees. I made a lot of my purees which was really easy. We also used Earth's Best and some organic Gerber. BRU usually has good sales on Earth's Best.
We started making our own foods but soon found that there was a very limited selection of organic fruits and veggies we could get at our local grocery stores. Whole Foods or a farmer's market was still about a 30 minute drive away, and we just weren't making it there nearly often enough to sustain as her food source, so we swtiched to store bought. I really like Earth's Best too. Mostly for the selection.
In additon to her standby favorites, I can always find her something new to try (Babies R Us is right around the corner from us and they're a good source!)
When we do find something yummy and organic at the grocery or make it to Whole Foods we do make her yummy treats out of it ourselves.
Maybe it was just me, but I hated the Plum stuff. It tasted like plastic or something.
You can also mash some steamed (or raw) veggies and fruit with a fork. Esp. avocado, banana, and fleshy steamed veggies.
