Toddlers: 24 Months+

My son is obsessed with wheels, n e 1 else?

Ok, my ds is 16 months old, ever since he was 10 months he has been obsessed with wheels, especially the w heels from his stroller.

I asked the ped once if that was normal, you know this whole autism scare with vaccinations bla blabla.       She just laughed ( i'm a first time mom) and said he was fine that he is very alert and understands and makes lots of eye contact so she wasn't worried.

Well since he was 10 months evertime he would be in his stroller he would look over and just watch the wheels spin. He could do this for a long time and not get bored.  If the stroller was in the house he would run to it and spin the wheels  and walk around the stroller and check out the wheeels.  It's funny kind of looks like he's checking out the " ride" like a guy would check out someones new rims or soemthing.

Anyways he does this with his wagon too and this weekend we thought this phase would of passed now that he is 16 month but nooooo.

We went to a park where they had a neices bday party and there were tons of strollers.  Well sure enough my ds was more into checking out everyones strollers and spinning the wheels than the activities.    He would even try to leave with someone elses stroller , I mean strangers strollers. lol

He would get so pissed when we would take him away.  Now does anyones elses child do this?             Is this normal?     I agree with the ped that ds is pretty alert and very active and is on track.

I think now it's just bugging me that we have to fight him or pry him off of other peoples strollers.

So maybe we should buy him some cars for xmas!         He only has like 2 of them , cars, but not age appropriate so I took away. Which ones are good?

Any xmas gift suggestions?  besides a stroller he can play with?  lol just kidding.

thanks

  • My son has a truck obssession.  He runs to the window when he hears one, loves all his toy trucks, only wants to read books about trucks.  He LOVES his fisher price garage and his playschool wheelie trucks.  He also has a bunch of matchbox cars - they say 3 and up but he doesn't put them in his mouth and is so gentle with them - I don't worry.  He has a great garbage truck - Batatat - that I ordered online from Target as well.

  • Well, for my son it was air conditioners, vents, and speakers.  You know, those mysterious things that are attached to the walls that make noise and fascinate/scare toddlers.

From about 18 months until he was 3 (and even now, at 4 he STILL notices and talks about fans, vents, and speakers!) we could hardly take him anywhere without getting the full rundown on all things mechanical that were part of the building.  Good grief!

I agree with your pediatrician's assessment that he's just observant and curious about something that fascinates him.  Toddlers just don't have the life experience to realize -- hey, it's just a wheel on a stroller... there's millions of 'em out there... no biggie.  They also don't have the impulse control to realize they can't just go over and grab onto someone else's stroller and check it out!

My DS's obsession peaked at around 21 months.

  • Yes...my fifteen month old is. Has been for a while. I'm not worried at all.
  • DD loves pushing strollers.  She has one that was a present from Build A Bear that is small enough that she can easily push it.  And half the time we take out her umbrella stroller, she ends up pushing it around.

She doesn't have one thing that she's so focused on, but she LOVES balls and they are one thing that can entertain her for long periods of time.  Big ones, little ones, cat toys, etc.  So we have lots of them around.

There are lots of age appropriate toys out there with wheels.  DD has a couple of tractors, a carriage, a train, and all have moving wheels.

  • mine has a wheel obsession, too.

I just buy tons of car and truck toys and it keeps him happy.

  • Sam used to have a thing for door stoppers. The spring ones that are attached to the walls. He would stay there for HOURS and just flick it so he could hear the "boing". Friends houses/Families houses...it didn't matter. He'd hunt them down and stay there. He would through a fit when we tried to move him!
