Mom Car Suggestions?

I'm in the market for my first mom car and would very much appreciate any and all suggestions. I'm not ready to spring for a mini van. Not yet, anyway. Smile It'll just be me and LO most of the time, but I'll need room in the cargo area for my two dogs as well (an 80 lb. lab and a 45 lb. lab/beagle mix). Ideally, I'd like to avoid a huge SUV, but it seems that many of the crossovers don't have much for cargo space. Does anyone have a vehicle that they love (or just really like) and would recommend?

TIA!

Re: Mom Car Suggestions?

  • I have a Tahoe... and I LOVE IT!  but it is considered a full size SUV.  But!  my SIL had the murano which was really cute!!! but within 6 months she traded it in and got a mini van bc she said there just wasnt enough room.... so you may need to really think about if a small SUV is going to be enough room for you.  (IMO they really arent much bigger then a car)

  • A girlfriend of mine has a Honda Element that she really loves and that I lust after. Its really spacious and nice.
  • I have the scion XB sport. I love it. Some people may think its too "toaster like" but thats one of the things I love about it. Our 2 dogs fit into the back, and our full size stroller we bought also fits great back there with plenty of room to spare.

  • We just bought my "mom" car last week.  I got a Rav 4 and LOVE IT!  The car seat fits great in the back, great safety ratings and a huge trunk space that both my labs fit in nicely.

  • We're getting a Honda CRV which will be great for my one big dog, not sure how it would do with two.  I'd see if you can get a full day test run so you can see how your dogs fit.

I've got friends who just got a Ford Edge and really like it, it's a good price for the size.

  • I drive a Mercury Mountaineer, and I love it. The 3rd row of seats is easy for me to fold down, and we can easily fit luggage, groceries, or our 2 dogs in the back. :)

  • I drive a 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee and didn't have a problem until it hit 100,000 miles.  Now, i hate it and get nervous about it breaking down all the time.  It has reeeeally screwy electrical problems.

I'm currently lusting over the Lexus hybrid SUV.  But, since we bought our house in July and have a baby on the way in three months, I don't know how in the world we could swing adding a car payment since both our cars (his is a VW jetta) are paid off.  Good luck and let us know what you decide on!

  • I love my PT Cruiser... I bought it specifically for room for the three dogs (two small and one medium size) plus room for the baby and some baby gear. They look small but have a shocking amount of room inside.

I was originally looking for a Nissan Murano (drove an Altima at the time) so I'm also thirding that suggestion - love them!

  • My dad has a Toyota Matrix and I ADORE IT! It's relatively cheap (he paid $16,000 for it, but he's super good at bargaining his cars!), it's sporty, I LOVE the space in the back for the huge Kolcraft Contours double I had at the time AND groceries, and it fit very well the 2 car seats I had and will also fit in my 3 car seats, and I liked how easy it was to manuever. It wa sa zippy lil thing!

Of course, I have a Dodge Grand Caravan, so I do have a mom van. :) But, when fmaily comes to visit, we all fit in one vehicle so it's awesome! And SO spacious.

  • If your not looking for new I have a Buick Rendevous.  the don't make them anymore but I think  they went up to 2009.  I love it.  It has a ton of room in the back for hauling.  Mine is an 06 and we have put 130k miles on it with not problems.

  • We have a Infiniti FX35. and i absolutely LOVE it :) it is a sports car in an SUV haha Eleanore (my cars name.) drives fast and has plenty of room.
  • I'm also in the market for a car for me and baby with extra cargo room.  Going to test drive a Ford Edge next weekend since they have some deals in our area right now.  We're also considering the Honda CRV.

  • I currently drive a Mazda CX-7 which I love.  Its a crossover so it drives like a car and still has plenty of room.  I've had both my dogs (60 and 70 lbs) in the back and they were fine, although they are good travellers.  I dont think I could fit both dogs and stroller in the back though.  It gets pretty good mileage, looks good, and is affordable.

I've also had a Mercury Mariner - which was a great small SUV but I didnt like that it drove more like a truck than a car.  However, my DH loved it for that reason so its a personal preference.  (I'm not sure if they still make them or not, the Escape is the same car, the Mariner just has all the extras/better interior, etc.)

DH had a Durango for the last 5 years that he loved, I hated driving it - again becuase of the truck vs car thing - but I was switching from Mustang/Miata/Accord to Durango.  It was a big difference in handling and size.  It had tons of room for whatever we needed but it did go through gas like crazy.  Although not as bad as the F-150 he now drives.

My mom has a Nissan Rogue -- its almost identical to my CX-7 but I could get more for my money with the Mazda as far as features and I used to work for Ford so I still get a discount on Mazdas.  The Rogue is a great car too.  I think if I was going that route though, I would go with the Murano just to have a bit more space, especially if I intended to keep it for the next 5 or so years.

  • I have a Ford Explorer and love it! I am a foreign car fan but got a really good deal on this when I wanted to go bigger. I have the xlt with the 3rd row and still have trunk room.

I also recently purchased a RAV-4 and I am happy with the space.. lots of trunk room and room for my 2 beagles. The carseat fits fine for me, but when DH is driving, he has to scoot his seat forward which is a little uncomfortable for him. I would highly suggest taking carseats into the dealership with you and make sure you can both fit! This has been an issue for many friends of mine :) Good luck!

  • I have a Chevy Trailblazer and absolutely love it. It has plenty of cargo space but is not quite a full size SUV and it gets great fuel milage.

I have a 2008 Ford Edge and I absolutely LOVE it!  Rides great and has tons of room in the back seat for a car seat and two people.  We put our three dogs in the trunk and they seem to be comfortable back there too.  Highly recommend it to anyone - and the new 2011 models are to die for!

This! We just bought ours a few months ago and LOVE it. The keyless entry is awesome (don't even have to take the keys out of my purse to unlock it) and so is the push button start. It's very roomy but not too big. We have three dogs and they fit great in the very back.

  • If we weren't having 3 we would get a Honda Pilot lots of room when you fold down the 3rd row. But when you have 3 kids around 2 yrs apart and they are all in 5 point harness carseats you get to drive a mini van or giant suburban. We are going the mini van route for many reasons.

  • I have  Chrysler Pacific and love it!  We have tons of space in the back for luggage, kid stuff, dogs, etc.  It's even wide enough to fit in all three car seats :)

  • Thank you SOO much for all the advice! It sounds like there are a lot of great options out there, so DH and I have some serious looking to do. Thanks again!
