Breastfeeding

leftover BM...how long?

today was the first day LO went to daycare.  keep in mind this is run by two women that BF both their children.  I sent an 8oz bottle and two 4oz bottles.  i asked them to save one of the 4oz bottles if she didn't eat it all so i could reuse it.  i came to pick LO up this evening and found out that they fed both 4oz bottles, and half of the 8oz bottle to DD.  This was at 3:30pm.  i BF DD when I got home before I realized it(she was crying in the car cuz she was hungry).  now she probably won't be hungry to eat until about 8pm or so.  what do i do with the milk?  right now i have it in the fridge, and it was in the fridge throughout the day.  Do I throw it out?  Or do I use it for the 8pm feed and pump??  Thanks!

Re: leftover BM...how long?

  • Check out kellymom.com for more info but they say that freshly pumped milk is good at room temp for up to 10 hrs and in the refrigerator for 8 days.  Previously frozen milk is good in the refrigerator for 24 hours.  I think it would be fine to use for the next feeding.

  • i swear - everywhere i look is different - but this is what i followed for my first, and was told the same by the hospital for my second (i ONLY pump)

    Room Temp - 6 hours

    Fridge - 6 days

Freezer (section of Fridge) - 6 months

    Chest/Upright Feezer (chest) - 12 months

I also go by once baby starts a bottle, it's good for 1 hour

  • I definitely know that if the baby has began to drink the milk it is only good for an hour after that.
