2nd Trimester

Is anyone getting heartburn so bad you vomit?

This is happening more and more.  I never had it with DS.  It seems to be different types of food everytime so it's hard to avoid.  Tums isn't really helping.  I'll ask the doctor but I wasn't sure if this was common?

  • I do. My dr ok'ed Zantac. You can also try papaya enzyme.
  • I haven't had much heartburn, but the one time I did it was burning in my throat so bad I threw up. Papaya enzyeme is great (it also settles your tummy)

  • I haven't thrown up yet but I've wanted to.  I have bad heartburn/acid reflux almost every day and it's messing with my sleep and vocal chords.

  • Yes! I always feel fine after I throw up though, which is a relief. Mine always happens super late at night too, like two in the morning.

  • I haven't actually vomited but I have had moments where I bent over forward to pick something up and ended up with some stomach contents in my mouth.  Same with burping.  So gross!!  And painful.  This will sound odd but I have found something that works:  put 2 tsp of apple cider vinegar (the raw unfiltered kind like Bragg's brand) into 6oz of water and drink it.  It's not so bad to drink and IT WORKS!  Something about the enzymes in the apple cider kill the acid and burning. I've drank it by itself when I'm in the midst of a reflux episode, and also drank it while eating a meal I thought might give me reflux in order to prevent it.  Works either way.

  • Oh yeah. Usually that's what happens with heartburn though. I've had bad heartburn before I was pregnant. Don't worry about the vomiting. Usually you're throwing up because of the gas or acid trapped in your throat. Usually when I have heartburn I make myself burp up the gas and it stops. I try not to wait it out because it'll get to the point where I will have to throw up. Before pregnancy I would only get it if I ate something super greasy. Now I sometimes get it even if I just drink a glass of Pepsi.

  • Yep, threw up for the first 20 weeks or more just because of stomach acid most of the time. Tums didn't help so it was on to Zantac. My dr said I could take Zantac and Tums since they work in different ways, just be sure not to take more than the recommended amount of Tums. That stopped working and now I am on a prescription heartburn medication. It works so well that I don't have to bother with the Tums. Definitely ask your dr just so you can stop suffering!

  • I've used Rolaids and they kinda work, same thing with a glass of milk. Peppermints also work as a temp. measure. I haven't thrown up yet, but once it was so bad I wanted to and the rest of the time, it's just rediculously painful. I haven't found anything that works just yet, but I go to my doc in about a week so (if I don't forget lol) I'll ask her.
  • I get it all the time, I take Zantac for mine and sometimes that doesn't even work.

  • My heartburn is excruciating every.single.day, but mostly right before bed.  I have in fact woken up with vomit in my mouth.  I found that a very large, cold glass of milk helps in a pinch.  For the most part, Zantac helps tons, but last night, even that didn't work.

My sister (also pregnant & due in 4 weeks) has this problem as well.

  • I've had horrible heartburn to the point of wanting to throw up. The pepcid a.c. chewables work... but only for a very short time. My last trimester has welcomed this awful pregnancy symptom.
  • Yep, and thrown up a couple times from it, I found a glass or even a mouthful of milk works wonders (ice cream is even better and a great excuse to eat it lol)
The worst I had was when someone told me a mouthful of vinegar would fix it, they were lying, although that did make me throw up and I felt a lot better after I did.

  • Constantly and worse at night. We raised the head of the bed a few inches and that helped a little. Next doc appointment i am asking what else i can do because its making me unable to eat since i get so sick! Hopefully yours will taper off soon or you find a good remedy for it!

  • Ugh, I am so glad that someone else posted this!  My heartburn has been so bad that I have found myself vomiting acid on occasion.
  • I do, and it's horrible.. tums works for only an hour or so than the heart burn is back and it makes me want to throw up. Most the time when I do it's nothing but the acid which is burning my throat and rubbing it raw.

  • I'm asking my OB for a script next week. Zantac is no longer working :(

  • I haven't thrown up because of it but I get it every single day. Seems like anything and everything gives me heartburn...including pancakes!! I hate the taste/texture of tums and all that. But I just push through it now.

  • With my son, I had it bad. I had morning sickness 24/7 with him for the first 5 & 1/2 months and then when it finally did let up, the heartburn would get so bad that I would throw up anyway. Once when I was about 6 & 1/2 months, I threw up on my husband after sex because the heartburn had gotten so bad. He was sweet about it though, cleaned me, himself, and the bed up and told me not to worry about it. He was good about making sure I had Tums handy at all times and would cook mild foods for me to help keep the heartburn at bay. To be honest, though, it was just bad and I just had to deal with it. I was throwing up stomach acid in the delivery room. My son was totally worth it though! Good luck! Hang in there, it will be worth it in the end.
