So I went to the hospital tour today and I got most of my questions answered...but I think I walked out with a whole lot more questions than initially lol ....sooo ASSUMING everything goes well and I have a vaginal birth ...what the hec happens between me popping the baby out and being discharged....I'm having trouble writing my birth plan (about visitors...etc).
I know each hospital has their own policy...but more or less...what happens to mommy and baby after delivery...?
Re: XP:2nd x moms-walk me through the 1st 48hrs.
Sleep while you can as much as you can at the hospital.
I went in the hospital on a Friday night and came home Monday afternoon. DS was born Saturday afternoon and everything was pretty textbook. I don't remember too much right after the initial birth, things seemed to move fast.
In my case with DS the weather was really bad so we only had like 3 visitors for about 20 min. which was fine by me. However, the hospital staff seemed to be in my face all the time. Checking things, bringing LO for eating, lactation consultant, nutritionist, forms to sign, pediatrician visit. I mostly remember being really hungry and just thankful I was learning to use the bathroom again at the hospital (since it can be painful at first). The hospital did photos too, and if you have a boy and choose to circumsize him that will happen the next day too.
I would have been exhausted with more visitors from the outside. Needless to say the 48 hrs. flew by and we were home before I knew it. I was anxious to get out of there and get settled back home.
We were there Saturday evening through Tuesday early afternoon.
During that time, the nurses took vitals on DS and I both several times. We had to keep a grid of all the diaper changes and feedings that happened. There was also a few times when the nurse came in and massaged my abdomen to get it to go back down - also I think they tracked how much bleeding I was doing.
We had quite a few visitors, but the nurses were really good about limiting their time in our room because they knew it was important (for me especially) to rest as much as possible. The only time DS was apart from us was when they took him to be circ'd and that was probably 15 minutes max. They did all his other tests (blood, hearing, etc) right in our room.
This is one of those good in theory things (because I couldn't do it in practice), but I am going to say it anyway. Get as much rest as you possibly can, even if you have to let them take the baby to the nursery or hold all your visitors for a while. Those first couple of days home from the hospital are TOUGH so the more rested you can be in preparation, the better off you will be.
Similar to pp's. We had to stay 2 days b/c I was GBS+ w/DD plus had a very fast labor so no antibiotics on board. Otherwise we would have only stayed 1 day. I HATED staying the extra day!
Like others said, vitals at various intervals/abdomen pushing/paperwork/etc. Didn't have to keep a chart of diaper changes or feedings. The pedi on call from our office checked DD each day as did my OB. Our only option is to "room-in" unless baby is ill so I was up much of the night from the beginning. Mostly a lot of resting, hanging out, and visitors. We had a lactation consult right before discharge.
Vistors were a little crazy since both of our families live in town AND I worked at the hospital were I delivered. They've cracked down their visitation policies since then and I'm kinda looking forward to it.
