Just FYI, you can't wear a baby through security checkpoint anymore. You have to take off the carrier and put it through the xray and carry the baby through. It's really a PITA! Apparently the rules just changed a couple weeks ago.
That's weird because I wore Libby in the Ergo both coming and going to Seattle on 10/14 and 10/24 so they must have JUST changed it! Boo...we're headed to Las Vegas for T-day and plan to use the Ergo.
interesting - I guess that is what I saw the other day at SFO because there was a mom traveling with a baby and not only did they make her take the baby out of the carrier but then had her submit to a pat down anyways (and did a pat down of the baby) I got front row seats to this because I had to wait for them so someone could check my cooler of breastmilk. Which reminds me... traveling with a baby and/or breastmilk and food has made me realize just how all over the map the "rules" really are.
In PHX they took out each individual bag and rubbed them all with the explosive detector sheets. (holy time consuming) since I had about 80+ ounces. They did something similar in Seattle (was going outbound with Jack and had packed some plum organics food packs).
In Spokane they they me a holier than thou lecture about not having the bags frozen (most hotel fridges don't have a freezer) and made me toss a reusable ice pack because it wasn't frozen solid (had been using it since check out) and then just to be sure made me wait there about 20 mins while they called a supervisor or something just to make sure I could even travel with the milk since I had tried to carry a banned item through (?? even though I was totally complacent (but internally annoyed) to have to toss the ice pack since I had carried it through 3 other airports by then).
Most recently at SFO they didn't seem to do any additional tests, didn't care if it was frozen or not (had both) AND let me keep the ziplock bags of water/ice I had been using since check out.
In Indiana they had me remove all the bags of milk from my cooler (they were frozen solid) and lay them flat in a bin (kind of gross and strange) and then about 4 people surrounded the bin and came to some sort of agreement that it was ok.

Yeah, they said it JUST changed. When we went to Seattle in Sept I was able to wear her through. The guy in Hawaii said it just changed last week. Lucky me.

How annoying! It's always kinda been like that with TSA. You know what TSA stands for, right? "Thousands standing around". Hahaha.
yeah must have been super recent b/c I flew on Oct 23 and they did not make me do that.
what Robbi is describing is exactly what happened to me....not sure of the other woman's circumstances but they tested my breast pump for explosives residues and it came up positive!!! so after that, they made me take her out of the carrier, they patted her down (ridiculous) and then patted me down. then they ran the breast pump through the xray machine again (even though i had already run it through by itself the first time) and then they let me go on my merry way.
Honestly I don't think there are any actual official rules. Like all you gals are saying, every single airport is different. It's really crazy and I can see how it's upsetting. I could see if EVERY airport was a PITA...then you just know what you're dealing with and expect it. They really need to get a better standard systemwide set of rules/instructions when it comes to travelling with infants. It's hard enough just getting to the actual checkpoint with the baby and all the gear. Thank goodness we fly constantly and on standby. We've learned to expect anything. It does get easier ladies! Our girls have been responsible for their own carry-ons, putting their shoes in the buckets and getting themselves thru the scanners since they've been about 2 1/2 -3 years old. It's glorious!!! We're almost stress free at the checkpoints now. Just gotta get Matt Matt carry his own backpack and learn to put his own shoes on!!!
