I have a question for bedsharers/co-sleepers

If your LO goes to bed earlier than you but you sleep together, how do you put them to bed? Do you lay them in your bed and then come up later?

I don't co-sleep or anything, was just wondering about the logistics of it all.

Re: I have a question for bedsharers/co-sleepers

  • We bedshare part time.  LO goes to sleep in his crib and joins us when he wakes up (after we've gone to sleep)

We did something similar.  When we used to bedshare we would start DD off in her swing.  At the time she was NOT having the crib so swing it was.  She would typically sleep about 2 hours and that would bring us to about 10:30/11:00, around the time I would go to bed.  Sometimes when she was having a bad day and refused the swing I just sucked it up and went to bed with her.  Sometimes I would sneak off once she fell asleep but usually I'm tired enough that I would fall asleep too.

  • I put him to bed in our bed, then when he falls asleep I leave. We join him in bed when we're ready to go to sleep. Our bed is a mattress on the floor, per bedsharing recommendations, so it's totally safe and he knows how to get up and down all by himself.

This is what we have done. Starting tonight we are not bringing him into our bed when he wakes up. It is going to be a really tough transition but DH and I are not getting any sleep in our current situation because DS wakes up and moves around all night long. Wish us luck!

  • We co-sleep and DS usually goes to bed around 8pm.  We have bedrails on our bed.  I usually we go to bed with him around 8pm because I nurse him to sleep.  That is when I read and bump or I will watch a movie with DH.  DS gets up at 5:30am so I have plenty of time during the day to get what I need to get done and am usually tired around 9:30pm.  :)

  • Late responding here, but at this age (19 months) we just put him in our bed when he goes to sleep. If he wakes before we come to bed (rare) he just calls out for us. He can get down from the bed easily by himself but never attempts to when he's in there along.

When he was younger and we worried about him more blindly just crawling off the side of the bed, we either put him in his crib until he woke up and then brought him into bed with us, or we used bedrails on our bed.

  • We usually go to bed when he does, which works out considering he's a night owl. If we do want to stay up I can nurse him to sleep and then get up. Sometimes when my insomnia is raging I get up for a couple hours while DH and DS sleep.

  • Oh and although we have bedrails, DS can get down off the foot of the bed by himself and has been able to since he was 9m or so. We don't worry about him falling if he's alone.
