Baby Showers

Shower vs. Due Date

Does anyone think I would be pushing my luck by having my shower 3 weeks before my due date?  Even though my EDD is April 1, our calculations show that this baby is more likely to come later than that...of course I know that it's on it's own schedule, but do you think I would be too uncomfortable/ in labor/ etc. by having my shower in March?

Re: Shower vs. Due Date

  • I'll be 37 weeks (to the day) of my shower, which is next weekend. I'd have preferred to have had it sooner but my aunt didn't ask when I wanted my shower so I didn't have a choice.

  • Yes, I think that's too close to your EDD.

    A. I had DD at 36w5d, so I can't even imagine making it to 37 weeks.

    B. I'd want to have things (like her nursery, clothes) done/bought/washed well before 37 weeks.

My preference is a shower around 32-34 weeks.

  • I was put on bed rest at 35 weeks so it would have been difficult.  It's hard to say because every pregnancy is different.  You just have to plan it and roll with the punches.

  • I think it's pretty close.

Plus, by that point you may be rather uncomfortable.  IMO, make it 2 weeks before the EDD or so.

FWIW, I've had a pretty great pregnancy but I'm 36 weeks today and starting to feel achy almost all the time.  My shower was back when I was 32 weeks and felt a lot better.  Looking back, I'm glad that's when it was.

  • You may want it sooner so you have time to purchase any essentials that you didnt get as a shower gift.

  • I don't know the percentages, but very few babies are more than 3 weeks early.  I think it's fine.  My shower was 11 days before my due date.  I would have liked to have had it earlier, but it worked out just fine.  I will say though that once it was over, I lay down and couldn't/didn't want to get up for quite a while.  My ankles were swollen, and I was really tired.  I had fun during the party though.
  • I think between 35-37 weeks is okay, I had mine at about 36wks. One of the exciting things about a shower is seeing mom-to-be with with a cute bump, and for me, I didn't have much to show before then.

  • I had my shower 29 weeks (yesterday) and was so glad I did. I have plenty of time to get what i need, and frankly I was exhausted when it was over (and today too). can't imagine being more pregnant and enjoying it!
