home birth/hospital birth impact on BF

interesting post  - a mom who had both experiences compares the two

Re: home birth/hospital birth impact on BF

  • Wow, that was a really informative read.  I don't really think the difference in her experience was one being born in the hospital and the other being born at home but the level of education and trained help that she was able to get.  Also I think the extended skin-to-skin contact you get after birth helps a lot.  I will never forget my first home birth watching the baby just climb her way up and latch right onto the nipple after just five minutes without Mom doing anything!

I heard recently that hospitals can now get "baby and mom friendly" (I can't remember the official term) certification where they encourage skin to skin contact for an hour after birth and a lot of hospitals are opting into this program saying it really does help.  So instead of weighing, measuring, and swaddling the baby right after birth they put the baby on your chest and leave you alone for an hour.  If hospitals are realizing this is important and making a special certification for it there must be something to it.

  • It is an interesting story, but even though I am probably one of the most pro BFing moms out there, I would still argue that every baby is different & there's no way to tell if the outcome would have been different otherwise. I also think that doing your homework ahead of time about hospital births & how you can get the birth you want really pays off & would have prevented the rough times she had with the first baby. Def think this is a great promotional read on BFing & homebirths, but I'm just acting as devils advocate here. Thanks for posting!
