Babies: 3 - 6 Months

I'm tired of "He's a big boy!"

So DS was 8 lbs 2 oz at birth and has consistently gained 1/2 lb a week (except for the first few weeks of course).  Everyone keeps telling me "Oh wow!  He's such a big boy!"  He's really not, though.  He's always been between the 50th and 70th percentile on weight.  He might be a little tall, but that's about it.  I think he's totally normal.  Everyone acts like he's a freak because he weighs 14 lbs now.  Anyone else get this??

Re: I'm tired of "He's a big boy!"

  • Shoot my second weighs almost 20 lbs (his big brother only weighs 27) so I get it all.the.time. It doesn't really bother me because people aren't trying to be mean.

I love squishy babies and your LO is such a cutie so try to ignore people:)

  • Everyone straight up calls my DS fat! He is in the 75% for weight and 50% for height. I think he looks like a normal baby. I do not think he is fat. I think they all call him fat because they compare him to his sister who is above the 95% for height and 50% for weight. She feels so much lighter, and to me she looks very skinny.

lol this except it is my 2 y/o and he weighs 50lbs while his 10 y/o brother weighs 60. lol  I have a feeling DS3 is going to take after his 1st big brother.  He is 3 months and only weighs 11 lbs.

  • DS is 98th for height and 54th for weight and we get it a lot too, it's definitely a bit annoying, only because he's not chubby lol.

  • I get it all the time with both, and it drives me crazy!  Both of my kids are average to small.  So it just makes no sense.  I usually think it is because my husband is a really big, stocky guy, and people just assume my boys are taking after him.

  • We get that a lot too. In DS's case, he is really chunky (more than 19 lbs) and tall. A stranger once came up to us in a restaurant and said, "those are the biggest legs I've ever seen"!

  • Mathieu is around 19lbs now... He is a big boy and as you can imagine people love to tell me over and over... I don't mind anymore. I love that he is my squishy monster baby!

  • I get the opposite almost. I think DS is so big but people call him "a little peanut" because he was born 3 1/2 weeks early. He was 6 pounds 9 ounces at birth and now is 15 pounds 3 ounces! He is in the 80th percentile now, has big chubby cheeks and thunder thighs so I don't know how anyone could think he was small!

  • Both my kids are big and always have been.   My 2 y.o. is the height/weight of the average 4 y.o.   I'm now more used to the comments, but they are annoying!

When DD1 was a baby, I remember some friends asking me "Umm, is your doctor OK with DD1's weight?  She's so huge!"   I wanted to slug them.

  • totally agree, My son is off the charts in height and 30-40% in weight and everyone thinks he is HUGE... He is not fat, just tall!!! It gets annoying for sure.
  • DD was a little over 16lbs & 25inches at her 4 month appointment. The first thing the nurse said when she came to get us from the waiting room was, "Oh what a chubby girl!" My mom CONSTANTLY makes remarks about how chubby DD is and how she needs to exercise more and eat less. WTH?! She's a BABY! Super Angry

  • Both my boys were 14+ pounds at their 2 month appts. They are both in the 95th for height and weight. People are always saying how big they are. Yep, I know. I'm their mother. Annoying. I try SO hard not to do that with other moms since I know how it feels!

  • I think people have no clue how big babies are on average. My daughter was 14lbs and 24.5 inches at 4 months. This was 70th percentile for weight and 50th percentile for height. All I hear is how long she is. Um, no, she's actually pretty average. I think people have no idea what's a normal size range for babies this age.

  • I get that a lot too, but he is a big boy. at 3 months he already weighs 15.4 lbs. but he is only in the 75th percentile for both.  (he was 7.4 at birth). hey, the bigger they are the healthier they are!

  • So, you think you've got it bad in the "he's a big boy" department?

DS was 11lb at birth. ELEVEN. He's consistently been in the 90-95th percentiles for everything, head, height, and weight.  So he's actually really proportional and therefore NOT chubby, he's just a big baby.

I've gotten it since day one and probably will until he's an adult. Stick out tongue

  • LO is in 97% of both weight and height, and I LOVE it! I had feeding issues at first (my breast milk came in late), but LO caught up and loves eating! Nothing wrong with a big baby! There's just more to love!

  • Eh - we've been hearing this since birth and I expect we will hear it for quite a while. It doesn't really bother me - DS IS a big boy. He was over 10 lbs at birth so he had a head start, over 14 lbs at 2 months and I expect will be maybe 18 lbs or so at his 4 month checkup. He's consistently 95% for height and weight...we're not worried (including the pedi) because while he is big, he is height-weight proportionate. I'm glad to have such a healthy boy! It's just so funny to most people because while DH and I are tall, we are both quite lean.

  • How old is he now?  DD2 was 8lb9oz at birth and is about 14lbs (I think now) at almost 5 months and I get the opposite.  Everyone is saying what a runt she is.  My MIL told me the other day that she looks like an Ethiopian baby next to my nephew (almost 7 months and around 20 lbs).
