Baby gate that cats can get through?

We have to buy baby gates this weekend and I'm wondering if there are any out there that cats can get through. Our cats' litter box is downstairs, so they'll need to be able to get around the gate and they won't be able to jump over it from the stairs. Any recommendations?

Re: Baby gate that cats can get through?

  • Both Amazon and onestepahead.com have these baby gates that have a swinging pet door - we just ordered one, because we have the same problem.  Our cat's litterbox is in the basement, and obviously needs to get down there, so we're hoping that works.

I'm assuming that it's small enough that the baby can't get through (I hope).

  • The only thing I can think of is to brace it with a little bit of space at the bottom so the cats can squeeze through but LO can't.  I don't know how realistic that is though haha  My mom had to do that to keep her dogs out of an area but still let the fat (i.e. unable to jump) cat out there to do his business :)

  • thats a tricky one. we have a basement door so i was planning on just keeping the door closed from now on and installing one of those mini cat doors for them to get down. but if you dont have a door, im not sure. we just got our first gate for our family room to kitchen and i watched as our VERY large cat was able to climb herself up and over it. she did not look too comfortable though and yes it looks like it would be rough with stairs on either side. you can check out evenflo's website or amazon, maybe they have gate measurements on their sites? sorry not of much help!

  • Here's a picture - I think we bought a different brand, but it's the same idea.

This is what we have set up - the cat door was already in when we moved in  - which was great when we put the litterbox down there. I also had MH install a baby gate there though. I close the baby gate behind me when I go down the stairs to switch laundry and stuff if I am home alone and LO is on the floor. That way I can keep the basement door open if I want to so I can hear him still. I also did it so that I can close the gate behind me even if I close the door so I can open the big door first and peek to make sure LO isn't near the door or gate when I open it and doesn't topple down the stairs as I open the basement door - it that makes sense. I want to make sure he isn't going to sneak up on me quickly as I am juggling laundry and coming up the stairs. I plan on putting a metal latch on the bigger door to make sure LO can't open the door also.
