My son (3 weeks) falls asleep each time I feed him. During the day, no big deal. However it PAINS me to burp him and hence wake him when its 5:15AM and he (and me) has been up and wide awake since 3AM. How do you handle?
If DD does not burp right away after a feeding during the night and she is passed out on me, I just put her down to sleep. If she is still uncomfortable, she will let me know.
I have always burped LO. In the beginning he would throw up a little. Now, because he seems to wake up sooner and seem to have restless sleeping. If he didn't do that, I'd wouldn't be burping him. Thankfully, he's always been going back to sleep.

I guess that's my problem. DS spits up volumes after each feeding and has difficulty falling asleep without feeding at night (passes out at the drop of a hat during the day, no amount of rocking, swaying, swaddling, etc. helps at night). I should have mentioned that I wouldnt think twice if I didn't jump at every sound/sign that he's spitting up.
I don't burp. My son had vomiting problems his first week due to my oversupply and I would wake up and freak out at any sound he made. I've found over the past few days, though, that when he night nurses he's not really getting that much in the first place because he falls asleep so fast and because I lay back with him on top of the boob so the flow is reduced. It's enough to put him to sleep, but not enough to make him spit it up. Because he's getting so little, he doesn't usually need to burp. At that point in the night he is so relaxed that sometimes just turning him over so he's on his back will produce a burp if he needs one.
Can you try rubbing rather than patting? When LO feeds at night, I just do some soft back rubs in an upward motion and it usually gets out at least one big burp. The patting seems to wake her up more.

My kid must be the only one who is put to sleep by back patting. He loves the rhythmic motion of being burped and passes out when we do it when he's tired.
