Anyone using cream to help prevent stretch marks?

I know you are going to get them regardless of anything you do, but anyone found anything that helps reduce the look and/or how many you get?

I right now have never had one, so I hope that means I might be one of the lucky ones that doesn't get them *knocks on wood*

 Any suggestions?

Re: Anyone using cream to help prevent stretch marks?

  • I'm just using Palmer's Coco Butter Lotion!  I'm not sure if this is going to help, but we'll see!

  • First time around, I used Vasoline Intensive Care Cocoa Butter with Shea lotion daily. Once in the morning, and sometimes at night too.  I know they say it doesn't help, but I didn't get stretch marks where I put it, I got them where I missed.... lol. So, maybe it helped, and maybe it was a coincidence... But I'm doing it again this time!
  • I'm such a skeptic that lotion actually helps prevent stretch marks.  However, I just moved to a very dry/cold climate and am trying to be better about lotioning.  I figured I may as well use Palmer's Cocoa Butter since I've heard good reviews.  I had a friend who raved about Strivectin, but I've never tried it.

  • with DS, I did them sporadically, and THOUGHT I was in the home-stretch, but like 4 wks prior to delivery they popped up - blam blam blam!!! Like, a lot. Just in the lower abdomen though.

So, that said, I already have em, I am not doing anything this time around. What's the point, when they are already there??!

  • Stretch marks are one of my biggest concerns about the pregnancy (as far as myself!) so I did some research.

I ended up buying a couple bottles of a lotion made by Novartis in Spain called Anti-Estrias which has Gotu Kola extract which was proven in a clinical trial to help.  I, too, am sceptical but I figured it couldn't hurt!

I also know the company Belli has Gotu Kola in their stretchmark products too, so you could try that...

Do you mind telling where you did get them?

  • With DS I didn't get any, and my mom got them, so I'm sticking with my same regimen this time around.

I use the Vaseline Cocoa Butter lotion in the morning after my shower, and Burt's Bees Mama Bee at night.  And I shower with Dove Nutrium extra moisture body wash.

Be sure to drink lots and lots of water!  I have heard staying hydrated really helps.  And eat well.

  • Palmers Cocoa Butter and Bio Oil might make your skin feel better and less itchy, but it will NOT prevent stretch marks.  What will help is this slightly smelly remedy:  take a small onion and liquify it in a blender.  Take a cup of the juice and paint it over your belly in the shower (makes for easy clean up, but don't do it under running water).  This will work - ask Dr. Oz!!!

I put lotion on my boobs and belly. I ended up getting stretch marks on the outsides of my thighs (saddle bags?) and my upper butt or lower waist, just in the back. Strange places, I thought...

  • With first pregnancy I just used regular body cream on my belly. Mostly to prevent itching towards the end. I did not wind up getting any stretch marks, but I think that has more to do with genetics.
  • Cocoa butter, every day. It worked for my mother, and she had 5 of us. Crossing my fingers that it'll do the same for my skin.
  • Thanks!  I have some stretch marks on my thighs from adolescence so I better start focusing there, too.

  • My mom didn't get any with me, and I didn't get any with twins.  I think it's genetic.

I use cream/lotion to help with the itchiness when I need it.

This! Except I got them on my thighs too.

Me too, so I think I'm likely to get them. I did a lot of google research and read that the Palmers works about as good as the more expensive brands so I'm going to use it. You can use a lot of it because it is much cheaper where as people try to conserve the expensive brands and miss spots or don't apply enough. I also read, that itching can cause stretch marks to be worse, so I figure that moisturizing twice a day will help with the itchiness and it won't make the stretch marks any worse than using nothing.

  • I've slathered on Jergen's Original every day for the last six years. Still, I wound up with stretch marks after I had DD and everything shrunk back to relatively normal size. Not incredibly bad ones, just a few on my tatas and some on my lower abdomen...

I am using the same thing!  This is my first time around.  Here's hoping it works!!! Wink

  • I'm using Palmer's Cocoa Butter specifically for stretch marks.  This particular one you can use as an all over body lotion.

     Here's hoping it works.

  • drinking lots of water ("moisturizing from the inside") is key, dehydrated skin is more likely to be damaged by anything.

I used pure, unscented shea butter.  It doesn't smell that great, but i'm allergic to perfumes and petro chemical lotions like Vaseline.

Plus if you ever watch the documentary "the disappearing male" you'll steer clear of most chemical lotions after that.  Scary stuff.

ETA: the only stretch mark I got was on my boob after DD was born...holy engorgement!

  • I used Palmer's religiously w/ DD.  I'm thinking of taking a more natural route this time--even if it's just Burt's Bees.  But I'm leaning towards Earth Mama Angel Baby--I love their diaper rash cream, and their stuff smells so good...and it's natural.

  • I also only use natural lotions.  I have been using Earth Mama Angel Baby lotion and stretch oil.  Whether or not it works, only time will tell.  It can't hurt though, and it makes my skin soft.

  • I too am using Palmer's. Can Earth Mama Angel lotion be purchased online?

  • There's a Palmers one made specifically for stretch marks that is ok.  I've heard that you can use vitamin e.  I use Bio Oil.  Seems to be working and its helping with the itching too.
