not waking to eat

I am starting to worry about my little guy.  We came home from the nicu on Oct. 25 and he has been doing good since then.  He has had a couple times where he has been a little sleepy and goes maybe 5 hours between eating.  Now today he has gone 6 hours overnight and then he ate 3-4 hours later then he went 7 hours between eating again and I had to force that and he only ate 45 ml or so then.  I am worrying about him.  He has been gaining weight so far- only 2 oz in 5 days but the nurse wasn't worried about it.  Anyone else go through this and what should I do??

Re: not waking to eat

  • I would call the doctor and check with wha they think.  It seems to be that is too long to go between feedings.  We were told that they wanted an oz/day and you are at less than .5 oz per day.  You might have to take his clothes off to wake him up.  The doctors def. wanted E to be eating every 3-4 hours for quite a while.

  • I would definitely be waking him to eat every 4 hours and doing things to help him be more awake to eat like changing his diaper, removing clothing, unswaddling, and massaging. That said you can't force him to eat and all you can do is keep offering. Hopefully he will pick up soon since he is nearing his due date.

  • When we brought DS home, I had to set alarms through the night to feed him. He did not wake up on his own until a couple weeks after his due date. I made sure to wake him every 3 hours to feed. Definitely try changing his diaper before you feed, unwrap him, and hold him away from you to feed. If we cuddled DS while feeding, he would go right back to sleep. GL and I hope he starts eating better for you. I know it's really stressful when they won't eat.

  • Our pedi wanted 3 hour feedings until 10lbs. We would set an alarm and found that unswaddling and a diaper change got her up and moving. By 12lbs she dropped to feeding every 4-6 hours but was much better at waking herself at the right times.

  • At our dr appt yesterday his Ped told me not to let our LO go past 4 hours. Sometimes he pushes that! When it is hard for him to get up, I take off his clothes, change his diaper, and rub his face and tummy. I kind of have to annoy him to get him up!
  • Andrew did this as well.  We called the doctor, and do, but there wasn't anything we could do.  We did make sure his reflux was controlled and he wasn't constipated and that helped, but he was just plain sleepy.

We couldn't wake him because if we did, he was too tired to eat.  He got by okay, and did better when he was older.

I recall him going 8 hours during the day at one point around that age.  But by 2 months old he was sleeping 8 hours at night but we let him sleep and didn't wake him, because it was pointless.
