VBAC

Did anyone experience this???

During the surgery I started to shake really bad.  I was still shaking for several minutes after I got back to the recovery room.  I also got a metal taste in my mouth during the surgery.

I asked the doctor about this at my 6 week post partum visit and she said that when you deliver a baby some women will shake, vaginal or c/section delivery.  I am pretty sure I started shaking before the my daughter was taken out.  She said the metal taste was from the spinal.  This is one of the reasons I want a VBAC so bad.  The whole c-section experienec freaked me out.  Did this happen to anyone else?

  • After my spinal I threw up twice and was shaking a little.  The Anesthesioligist (sp?) told me it was normal.  I don't remember if I was shaking the rest of the surgery.  But I do remember it happening again in recovery for about a minute.

  • I didn't, but shaking can be a side effect of both epidurals and spinals.  I'm not sure how often shaking occurs during a drug free childbirth (in other words, I'd imagine it's not really a side effect of childbirth perse, as your doctor seemed to imply, as much as a drug side effect).

  • I had this and it lasted a good hour after DS was born even though they gave me something in the OR to help with it.  It was so frickin' annoying!

  • My anesthesiologist warned me about both the shaking and the metal taste as he was administering the spinal in the OR.  I had severe shaking and vomiting reaction but no metal taste.  He gave me some other medication in the spinal line to counter the reaction.  I also had bad itchiness after my c/s which was also a side effect of the meds.

  • I shook like crazy after DS1, but had an epidural, not a spinal. I also shook after having DS2, and it was a med-free VBAC, but not as much as with DS1.

  • My shaking was out of control. I was shivering, shaking, puking, it was awful.

  • I had the shaking and itchiness during recovery. But the worst for me was nausea. I have a strong stomach, and I actually threw up repeatedly during recovery. I could barely hold my daughter. And instead of being as focused on her as I wanted to be, I was focused on how awful I felt. They had to give me anti nausea medicine three times before it had an effect. This is one of the reasons I'm considering a VBAC. For me, the recovery process was the hardest part. I feel like I missed out on so much with my baby, for at least the first week. The C-section itself was fine. (But it was a scheduled section, not emergency).
  • I shook very bad as a result of the epidural... my arms were flailing and teeth chattering.  I was told later that I was white as a ghost too.  The anestesiologist kept having to hold my arms down so he could get an accurate BP reading.  It was not pleasant, but not uncommon from what they told me.
  • I shake when I'm nervous anyway, so I started shaking before the epidural happened, but I was really quaking for awhile after it was administered. I was told it's a normal reaction.

  • I shook like a leaf from when the spinal took effect to sometime before they wheeled me to recovery. I had no nauseousness, itchiness, or any other ill effects from my spinal.

  • I am glad to hear I am not the only one this happened to. No one explained this to me ahead of time. I didn't agree when my doctor said it was the delivery of the baby.  I thought it was the spinal too.  Hopefully next time since I know what to expect I wont freak out so bad.  I never felt sick, but I was shaking so bad my teeth were chattering.  Not a good feeling to me.

  • Shaking is normal after giving birth, and can happen after any birth (med-free, epidural, spinal, etc.)  It's a result of the very sudden hormone changes that occur when the placenta peels away.  I was shaking so much after birth that I was afraid to hold my baby.

If you started shaking before the birth, it could be due to medication or something else but I don't really know.

  • I shook during my 2nd c/s. I had an epi for about 12 hours before my c/s and didn't have any problems with shaking until I was in the OR. I was told the shaking was normal and that it is more common with an epi as opposed to a spinal. I had a spinal with my 1st c/s and didn't shake at all.
  • I had a spinal with my c/s and shook like crazy.  It was this scary uncontrollable feeling.

I also shook after my med-free VBAC, but it wasn't as scary or uncontrollable feeling to me, even though it was uncontrollable, if that makes sense.

  • I didn't have the metal taste but I shook horribly after my c-section. I also shook uncontrollably during my labor with my VBAC before and after receiving my epidural.
  • I shook really bad - teeth chattering  when I was in the OR right at the time the give that big dose of epidural before they start the operation.   I shook like that for an hour - the entire time on the table and when they wheeled me back to the room.  I was too scared to hold my baby at first because I was shaking so much but then she was so swaddled she was like a football they laid on my arm.  I think the instance I stopped shaking I passed out for a half hour or so. The anesthesiologist said it was the hormones and medicine and next time I have a c-section I should get a spinal.  But I think it is the pain meds in general because I had an operation to have fibroids removed and when I came out of general anesthesia I was shaking and shivering.  This is another reason why I want to VBAC.
