Babies: 3 - 6 Months

those who nurse their lo to sleep. . . .

OK, I have read in the books that the baby will look for the nipple at the end of every sleep cycle and will need it to get back to sleep, but that never used to happen.  Now, I thought he was waking due to teething and the 4 month wakeful, but he wakes every hour just like it says in the book.  He falls back asleep when he nurses.  Does this happen to anyone else?  I know some use a paci to get to sleep and their LO's are not up every hour.  He will not take a paci though, I am so super confused about what to do!

  • I nurse mine to sleep but we haven't hit the 4 month wakeful. He does occasionally wake up during the night but he has found his thumb now so he usually sucks on that until he falls back asleep so I know he is not hungry every time he wakes up. However some nights I have nursed him when he first comes home from daycare and when he passes out 2 hours later after playing he will be out for the night. I know this isn't much help. Have you tried different types of pacifiers?

  • I nurse to sleep but the waking every hour hasn't happened for us.  One thing I did do was stop nursing to sleep for naps (Started during the 4 month wakeful).  Nap time I give her a paci (she's not a huge fan but will take it for a minute or two) and rock her to sleep.  Now at bed time I nurse to sleep and if she wakes up within 2 hours I'll just rock her and offer the paci.  She usually doesn't take the paci at night but will give up on boob search if I offer it to her.  During the 4 month wakeful period she would be up every 2-3 hours and some nights every hour.  But we finally made it over that hump (1.5 months later) and she's back to waking 1-2 times a night and only eating once a night.  YAY!

  • Other than during the 4 month wakeful, which lasted about 6 weeks for us, she has always slept between 5-7 hours, woken once to eat, and then gone back down for 3ish hours. She won't take a paci... but it hasn't really been an issue.

  • I usually nurse DD to sleep, but she has no problem if she wakes up and it is not there she can go back to sleep on her own.
  • I doubt your Lo is hungry every hour. I know it's easier to pick them up and nurse so you can just get back to bed, but every hour is a lot! At this point try soothing him? I know easier said than done. It took a week to break my Lo of this. I was a zombie at work and we were both miserable. BUT after a week she finally started sleeping again. Just keep working on it!

  • I nurse to sleep.  She was sleeping 12 hours, then a few weeks ago started waking every hour.  For the most part I'd feed her and she'd go back to sleep.  Now, 3 weeks later, she's sleeping 12 hours again.  They go through phases, I tend to just ride it out.

  • I would start praying that your LO finds his thumb!  Ds started sucking his thumb at 4mo and is finally able to self sooth.  (He still gets up 1-3 times a night, but at least it's not every hour!)

Before he sucked his thumb, he also refused the paci. What I did was push DS's mouth against me (like I was nursing) and wedge the paci in so he wouldn't really know the difference.  Sometime it would work, sometimes not... GL!  Just know that it can't last long

  • my baby is only 3 months but he just recently stopped getting up every hour and I nurse him to sleep. I stopped nursing him to sleep for a little while but it didn't fix the 1 hour problem. The only way I got him to sleep longer (now 4 hours straight) was to give him a bottle of breast milk and then nurse to sleep. I think he was falling asleep too fast to get enough milk. Last night I only let him be on the first breast 10 min and then switched him & he slept another 4 hours which is MAJOR progress for us.

  • We started the 4 month wakeful this week.  3 nights of horror.  Then, on the third night, I didn't know what else to do to get DD to go down and so I laid her on her stomach.  She was out in a minute and slept 10-5.  Last night I nursed her to sleep, rocked for about 20 minutes, laid her on her back and she was crying w/in seconds.  Flipped her over, asleep within seconds and slept until I woke her up at 5:30, so 8:30-5:30.  I think we've found our new miracle. I think it's easier for her to find her thumb this way.

My pedi said at 4 months it's ok to let the baby sleep on her stomach, and she can lift her head great.  I may get judged, but I'm getting sleep again.
