3rd Trimester

Another name post.

Crazy name spellings. WTH. It's still a common name even though you added a few letters that don't make sense.

Anyone with me?

  • Honestly, I don't know why people get so upset about others' choices on their children's names...  I mean, I get that some spellings are weird, but it's their own choice.  I don't make a big deal of anyone naming their child John or Jessica, because they're really common...  The children will survive.  DH and I both grew up having to spell our names out our entire lives and we're fine.

    Really.  Chill.

  • I cringe when I see some names. I feel sorry for the kids, and the parents actually, because it just makes them look like they don't know how to spell.

  • I honestly don't think it matters as long as it isn't completely outlandish. We are naming our daughter Alicen. Yes, we know that isn't the typical spelling of Alison. Lots of people have made fun of it. However, we are honoring an Alice with our spelling. We liked Alison, and Alice is a family name. We made up a combination. I understand, "you-neek" spellings piss some people off, but, hey, she's my daughter. I don't tell anyone else what to name their kid.

If you really want to make fun of our baby naming skills, wait till you hear her middle name!!

    (It's William.)

  • I agree.

We are going with the name Courtney, and everyone keeps asking if we are spelling it with a "C" or  "K".

My response is "The normal way! I want to be able to get personalized name items without having to custom order them".

First of all, I think the majority of people who get lectured on their spelling choices are people who are ASKING for opinions on the baby name board.  Then they get all butt hurt when we don't like their spelling choice.  I post a lot on baby names but never really give my input into names my friends use IRL.  It is your choice.  I will only give my $.02 if asked.  (I secretly feel bad for the baby with the poorly spelled name, but I don't lose sleep over it).

Second, I think that it is more than just unappealing to the eye (the spelling).  It is that adults with cre8tive names are less likely to get jobs, get interviews, etc.  We make snap judgements and if it looks like Jyssyca comes from a family of illiterates she is going to get less interviews than Jessica.  Read "Freakonomics" if you doubt that it matters.

  • They aren't my preference, but then our last name is really difficult to spell and pronounce (it's Polish) so we wanted to give our kid a more traditional name, with fairly "normal" spelling. That way she won't always have to spell out both her first AND last names Stick out tongue...hopefully will make her life a bit easier.

I see people complain about names on this 3rd tri board almost daily.  I've never even been to the baby name board and I see it all the freaking time. (and I'm not even on the Bump all day long...) I'm just saying, b!tch to your DH or besties if you want, but there is no reason for the rest of the Bump to hear about it on a daily basis...
