Laryngomalacia and AR question

My 8 week old DS has both layrngomalacia and AR. He was diagnosed with both by his pediatrician based on my reported symptoms and his obvious grunting, noises and loud breathing. His AR is much better controlled with thickened feedings and Zantac.  I was just wondering if anyone else was dealing with both these diagnosis. I have grown used to his loud grunts and noises, but his breathing is what is uncomfortable for me. He does not have apnea or any evidence of poor oxygen. When he is sleeping he breaths completely normal, but when he is awake his breathing is more labored and fast. I took him back to the pedi for evaluation and he felt it was related to both diagnosis and he was not overly concerned about it unless it worsens, that his heart and lungs sound great and he is oxygenating well. He says he will outgrow this and we will reevalute him at his 2 month appt in 2 weeks. If you have experience with this, did you LO have this kind of breathing, what symptoms did LO have, any treatments have you undergone (if any) and when did they outgrow it? I am debating if I need to have him seen by an ENT doctor to evaluate the severity of it. I love his pediatrician and trust in him, but this is just something I am not familiar with and am fearful.

Re: Laryngomalacia and AR question

  • I just wanted to say it is good his O2 levels are normal. That would be a huge indicator of something more serious. How fast is he breathing? Newborns do breathe at a faster rate that older babies.

  • I don't post much here anymore, but DD#1 had LM and AR.  Her breathing remained loud (especially when she got active) until she was over a year.  It lasted so long that she actually had a bronchoscopy to confirm the LM and rule out scar tissue from the vent or other damage.  It never seemed to bother her and she grew out of it after her 1st birthday.  Her breathing wasn't really rapid, it just sounded like really loud wheezing and she snored really loudly.
  • Oh, and the AR can cause or aggravate the LM so treatment of the AR may help the LM...
