s/o giving up bottles question

Right now I'm trying to wean DS off bottles to sippys--the problem is he drinks waaaay less from the sippy--I feel like I have to follow him around with that stupid cup all day!  The bigger problem is that he likes to take a big gulp and let it all dribble out of his mouth.  He's had water in sippys for months and does this occasionally with water (on purpose) too, but of course it's much messier with milk.  I must look ridiculous trying to catch it with a folded up paper towel whenever he takes a swig or even my hand...lovely.  Is this just part of the weaning and he's going to eventually drink as much as he needs??  I'm still doing a bottle in the AM and before bed just to make sure he's getting at least 16 oz total a day.

  • I have this exact same question.

  • Me too!  Would love any advice!
  • For us, we offer 3, 8 oz milk sippys a day and that is it.  The rest we supplement with water or juice.  I think it was a bit easier because our daycare already had those rules in place and don't let the children just hang out with a sippy all day.   I would just keep offering the sippy at breakfast, lunch, and dinner and let your lo take whatever they'll take.

That won't work for us :(  DS needs the calories from the milk and is supposed to be getting at least 28 oz per day

We're just sticking with the bottle for now.  We do sippies with meals but still do 4-5 bottles per day as well.  So, no advice.

I'm so tempted to try this, but am worried like PP that he just won't get the calories.  Is this what most people do, milk with meals only?  If you do that, do you give your LO snacks in between meals?  Thanks!

  • We went through this with our girls too.  Both drank water well from a sippy, but one would only take a couple oz of milk and the other just let it dribble out of her mouth.  We eliminated the morning bottle first and they were both basically ignoring the sippy and waiting until their afternoon bottle.  So, we eliminated that one as well to force them to drink milk from the sippy.  That helped a bit, but they still weren't doing great and seemed to be holding out for the bedtime bottle.  So, we turned that into a sippy cup as well and THEN we had some progress.  To me it seemed like they just needed to forget about bottles, b/c as long as they saw them as an option at some point in the day, they were just going to hold out and ignore the sippy.

It took a couple of days for them to get the hang of only having a sippy.  So for a couple days they didn't get much more than 10oz of milk, and even that required me to basically follow them around the house offering the cup every hour or so.  But once we got past those couple of days, they started drinking really well.  As of now they average about 16oz a day.  I offer milk first thing in the morning, with meals, after playing outside, and during bedtime stories.  I give them their cups for about half an hour and then refrigerate whatever is left to offer at another time.  They also drink about 5-8oz of water every day, and their water sippy cups are always available to them.

As for the calories--while they were getting used to the sippy and not drinking as much milk I just gave them a lot of cheese and yogurt to make up for the lost dairy.  I still do that on days when they don't seem to be in the mood for milk.

Anyway, stick with it!  My LO who used to just let it all pour out of her mouth put back 8oz in about 10 minutes yesterday.  I never thought I'd see that day, LOL!
