Anyone's DC in the same PreK for 2 years?

If so, was it a problem? I could see the child getting bored, or super attached and having trouble when it was time to leave.

My DD misses the cutoff, so will be in PreK for two years. My H wants to put her in PreK where she will go to school from K-8, but I love everything about the daycare setting where she is now, and not sure if I am ready to give that up!

  • L will be. He goes T/TH mornings right now, and next year he will go MWF mornings.

  • my dd is on year 2 of pre K.  She's not bored believe it or not.  She's doing the same things she did last year, but she's getting better at it now.  She just misses the cutoff for K.  The summer was a great break between the 2 years and she's got new friends b/c a bunch of the kids from last year are now in K so there are all new kids who are just turning 4, whereas she's going to be 5.  It's fine.
  • DS1 is in his second year of pre-K. He was allowed by the school to be in the program, full time 5 days a week last year b/c of his age (he's 3 days past the cut off here), but I had to pay full-time tuition for it. He's in it again this year, but our state has a VPK program so I'm only paying for the before and after hours he's there (I work full time).

Even when he was in it last year, he was one of the more advanced students. Thankfully, his class is very small and the teacher works to keep him interested. For example, while others were learning to write their name, she had him writing his first and last name. This year, he's learning to write his brother's name, his friend's names, etc. So he does the same things, but at a higher level.

I think if it were not for his school being able to accommodate that, I would have considered changing schools so he wouldn't be doing the same thing over and over again.

  • Both of my kids miss the cutoff, but DS is not in school yet.  DD's preschool is a joint venture between our school district and park district.  They have a 3s and 4s program.  The 3s go on T/TH and the 4s go on M/W/F.  So, DD did the 3s last year (turned 4 shortly into it) and is now in the 4s.  They keep the same teachers for both years.  But, it is an awesome program and I love that she is familiar with the setting and people because then that is a given and she can concentrate on just enjoying herself while learning.  I was the snack mom 2 weeks ago and I noticed a big difference in the curriculum between the 3s and the 4s...they really do buckle down on the concepts.  So, I actually like that we've been at the same school for 2 years.
  • We are dealing with the same issue, but have made a different choice. DD misses the cutoff by 4 days. She is in pre-k three days a week this year. We had a meeting yesterday with her pre-k teacher and the K teacher at her private Christian school. The teachers decided since she is reading that she would be better in K next year. So we will do private K next year then public K the year after, she has also qualified for our local GT school so if we can swing it financially she might go there for her second year of Kinder.
  • My kids have gone/will go to the same preschool / nursery school for 2 year each.  The teachers for the 3 or 4's are the same teachers the different ages go different days, also the programs are obviously more advanced in the 4s.  I don't think either will be too attached.  However if it is the same program 2 years in a row I would be afraid of her getting bored.  Good luck with your decision.

  • I would keep them at the daycare.  Basically, you LO is at the age to still be in preschool, even if close to the cut off.  I would not want to put them in with a bunch of kids who were going to be a grade ahead the following year.
  • Yes, they have 2 teachers and during "lesson time" one of them focuses on the younger kids and one on the older kids (though kids can hop between lessons/activities if they choose).

DD is in her second year and still loves it.  I also extended her time there slightly this year (she goes 3 half days and one full day).  The teacher gives her special projects to do when she's there for a full day so it's really special for her.

She is staying at the daycare PreK this year. We are looking towards next year, when we will have to decide whether to keep her in the same PreK or switch her to the PreK that is part of the elementary school. She won't start K until Sept 2012.  Either way, she will be in an age appropriate class.

  • DD will be at her preschool for 3 years. She makes the school cutoff by a few days and I hadn't made a decision as to what we were going to do when she was 2 turning 3 and could start preschool. Luckily, they have a pre-K and a super pre-k so I'm hoping the curriculum is different enough that we don't have this issue.
  • We will be holding my DD back a year (see my post above about it and her speech) and I am not worried about it at all due the program she is in this year and will be in again next year.  The PreK is run by the school and while they have the same focus year to year on what they want the kids to learn, they really follow the kids lead.  Right now, the class is very into learning about bones and the body, last year they spent a lot of time on sea animals.  The topics change as the kids interests change all the while working on the skills that kids this age should be working on.  My DD is now 4, turns 5 in June and school cut off is 9-1.  She is very young for her age and it really shows in the classroom setting.  On top of it, she has a severe speech delay and will hopefully really benefit from the extra year of PreK.  I ahve been told that is typically at least 1 child who repeats this PreK program each year and it is never an issue but I think that could greatly vary based on the program itself.  I know at my DD"s daycare (younger DD is still there), kids are moved solo based on age (and potty training for that preschool room).  The preschool 3 room has kids that are 4 and they stay there until they are school age or age 5 but the class is not open during the school year other than for the before/after school care so some of the older kids who just miss the deadline end up in the preschool program for a longer time period and the age gap can be pretty big.

  • DD goes to a Pre-K through the school district. She is in the second year now, PreK-4. She has had the same 2 teachers and the same classmates (minus kids who moved and plus 2 new kids).

Because it's a 2 year program, they go over different stuff in the second year. The first month is review after summer vacation and the rest of the year is working towards kinder.
