January 2011 Moms

Thoughts on these girls names?

Leila and Morgan, both for girls. Our last name starts with Mc, and I really don't mind alliteration.

I like Leila a lot, and DH does as well, but it reminds him of the Clapton song "Layla". I reminded him that even if a boy sings that song to our baby girl when she's older then we'll probably just be happy that he has great taste in music. He also likes Shayla, but that's not really my style and reminds me of Sex and the City.

I like Morgan as well, but I had a student with the same name who was terrible. She used to bite and punch the teachers. It's a unisex name, but I think it's much more commonly associated with women so it doesn't bother me.

Thoughts?

  • I like Leila too!
  • I like Leilah a lot.  Morgan is an okay name to me.  I wouldn't name my daughter it, but I don't hate it.

  • I love Leila, but Morgan not so much.
  • i LOVE leila and i love the way you are spelling it. it's such a pretty girl name

im not a huge fan of morgan but im not a huge fan of unisex names anyway so im biased there.

  • Like them both, but definitely leaning towards Leila...sounds like you are too!
  • Thats my daughters name.. :) I personally love it..

I have only had one person say like the Eric Clapton song.. :)

  • So funny, my mom just mentioned Layla today (spelt differently).  The first thing I said was it reminded me of Eric Clapton! lol  Needless to say, I think it's cute.  Just like you, Morgan (although another cute name), reminds me of a crazy kid from school.  Just very hyper and obnoxious.  It's a shame that working in education makes you associate a name with a horrible student.

    My vote is for Leila!

  • It makes me sad that Fiona is out... :-(   I love Leila, just such a pretty feminine name (I think I spelled it right) I have a bad experience with a little girl named Morgan and just hearing the name I see her face and amount of terror she caused in my preschool classroom.

    Yes I am :)

We've been through so many names at this point that I'm just exhausted. First we picked Fiona, which I adored. Then we picked Evangeline, which I eventually adored. Now for some reason they are both off the table.

The other thing I just realized that I don't like about the name Morgan is that the nickname for my student was "Morgy". Ewwwwwwwwwww!

Leila just sounds more beautiful to me.

I agree with pp who said it's a shame that working in education will change your opinions about names so much. It sounds like we all have had a few bad experiences with Morgan's!

  • I am going against the majority here I guess. I like both names, but I like Morgan better. If we let every annoying person that we knew with a name make us avoid using it we wouldn't have anything left to use. I am doing that, my horrible freshman roommate has the same first name that we pick out if LO is a girl, and even though I hated her at the time, I really like the name and it was also DH's Grandmother's name, so I am just getting over it.

  • I like Morgan.

There is a girl I work with name Leila. Nobody ever pronounces her name correctly. Including me. Its pronouced "Lyla" but people call her "Leela" and "Layla" all the time. So something to keep in mind

This.  All of the Morgans I personally know are boys, but I have no problem with it for a girl.

I think Leila is gorgeous.  I would pronounce it like "lay-luh" - is this right?

Yes, that's correct. I asked DH about spelling it "Layla" and he said he doesn't like it that way.

  • Leila is beautiful! Its one of our possible choices too! My DH likes Lyla or Lila better though...

I think Morgan is cute but its not a name I would use personally.

  • I love the name Leila!

  • I love Leila.  Our cat is named Layla, after the song :)

If we hadn't already named our cat Layla, we would have considered it for baby.

  • I really like Morgan, and it is definitely more associated with girls so I don't even really think about it as unisex the way I do with other names. Leila is NMS, I prefer Lila. The reason being, Leila will be pronounced by various people as Layla, Lee la, Lie la, etc. You may have to explain it a lot.

Personally,  I think Morgan McBaby sounds really cute. :)

  • I love the name Leila.  MH vetoed it b/c our LO's middle name will be Lois and he didn't like the way they sounded together.
Well, we're on our way to 3 kids, 3 and under.

  • Is Morgan a unisex name? I always think girl when I hear that name, but now that I think about it, there are some famous men w/ that name.  I don't know any make Morgan's IRL, though.

    Anyway, I LOVE Leila.

  • I like Leila, but does that mean Fiona is out?  Maybe I'd better read the replies to see I guess.  :o)
