The pedi says she definitely thinks he has failure to thrive He was down 6 ounces from yesterday. But it was a different scale and he had just pooped so I don't think it was really that drastic. We had to go to the hospital and have 3 vials of blood drawn. It was awful. I had to hold him in my lap and 2 other people helped me hold him down while another tried to get the blood. It took several tries and he screamed bloody murder. As I walked out people kept asking me if he was okay. I think the entire floor heard him screaming.
They're checking his iron levels, blood counts, and for lead poisoning. We are supposed to be getting a referral to a nutritionist. Hopefully we will get some answers soon.
Re: Failure to thrive updates

At least thety are taking a good approach to it. I hope your ordeal is over soon!

I know how difficult testing is on the little ones.

I'm so sorry you're dealing with this.
Question, though: What does your gut tell you about the whole situation? Do you feel like the pedi's diagnosis justifies your thoughts or do you feel like it's "wrong" somehow?
Bear in mind, I'm skeptical of all things Western Medicine...
I hope you find an answer soon! (((hugs!)))

My gut tells me he isn't eating enough. He eats 20 ounces per day on a good day. Some days it is closer to 15. I know that other breast fed bottle fed babies his size and age are eating 30-40 ounces. He has never been a good eater or interested in food at all. I'd like to look into underlying causes but I honestly think he just doesn't care for food. I want to find ways to get him more interested in eating.
I wasn't fond of the doctor I had today. I'm going back to our regular doctor. At one point I actually said "Look, I get that you want to leave since you have been in here with me for a whole 5 minutes but you need to sit down and talk to me. If you expect my insurance to pay for this visit you're going to actually have to do your job." Yes, I was a b!tch but she was trying to run out the door after barely looking at him. That got her to actually examine him and talk with me.
Good for you for sticking up for yourself and your DS. Thank goodness there are fabulous pedis & FP doctors out there who care. I hope you don't have to deal with her again.

I'm so sorry
Blood draws suck so much. (((hugs)))
omg, how awful!!! i am so sorry. i can't imagine having to do that, let alone having to do that alone. i am honestly in tears for you. i hope and pray that it is something minor that is easily fixable. and that whatever it is, you get answers very very quickly. {hugs}
Just wanted to wish you good luck with your DS.
If you want to try and fine a positive. DS had a ton of blood drawn at 9 month and then a blood transfusion (it was awful and was like you described your experience), after that he has never cried at his shots again.
more *hugs* and t&ps
and good for you for calling out that doc. make sure you let your pedi know what you thought of that substitute.. :-(
