Hawaii Babies

Craigslist question

Bella's crib is a baby italia and I LOVE it! It's a beautiful color and very sturdy. I found one on CL and they are asking $200. I asked if they are firm on the price and she said "name my price and they'll consider it" We paid $329 brand new for her crib in Expresso color. We wanted something more of an oak color for this baby (a little lighter than the one they are selling). They say it is in good shape but don't have any pics of the actual crib. We'd have to go there and look at it to see. It's about a 30 min drive from us. I'd imagine that we'd refinish it since we don't love the color...

This is the crib

How much would you offer? As a side note there are tons of cribs for sale on CL. Also I've posted lots of misc baby stuff (even a bundle me cover which I thought would sell fast) and household stuff on CL lately and gotten next to no emails if that matters.

Re: Craigslist question

  • personally, I think it is A LOT of work to refinish a crib!! so I probably wouldn't even want to go through that hassle, even to save some money. that is why we ended up selling the first dresser we got off CL and bought another one that we wouldn't have to refinish.  but, i understand if you need to save the money...or if you just generally enjoy DIY projects like that :)

when i first posted about getting a crib on CL last year, a lot of people warned me against getting one used b/c of the safety issue.  i think as long as you make sure it's not a model that has been recalled, and you check to make sure it's still nice and sturdy when you go look at it, you should be ok.  that said, i probably wouldn't want to pay more than $150 for a used crib (i think a good general rule is 50% of retail), especially if i was going to have to refinish it afterwards.  i'd actually rather wait for something else to pop up on CL and pay $150 for one that is good as is, and preferably only about $100 for the one you're referring to b/c of all the work involved w/that one.  just my 2 cents.

I thought about offering $100 but wondered if that was too low but then considering all the work I'd be doing on it, it would be worth $100... I LOVE DIY projects that's why I'm considering it! Also it's the same exact crib Bella has so I know it's sturdy, not recalled and an overall really nice crib.

on your end, $100 is not too low considering all the work you'd have to do..... on the seller's end $100 might seem a bit low, b/c they do not know what your plans are and are just trying to get as much money back out of that crib as possible.   my guess is that they're hoping you offer a price of $150.  if you are ok w/waiting for another crib then i'd offer $100 with the possibility that they may reject the offer and not sell you the crib at all due to your low ball offer.... or if you want a better chance of getting the crib (w/o offending them) i'd offer $125-150.  depends on how much you have your heart set on this one and how much you want to save :)

  • I agree with J. $200 is too high IMO but whereas I think $100 is what you should get for it, it may be too low from the seller's pt of view. If you have your heart set on getting that exact one they're offering, even if you need to refinish it, then I'd offer $150...otherwise, I'd look some more.

  • I ended up messaging them and they said no to the $100 or $125, the lowest they'll take is $180 and I'm not willing to go that high... I figure I'll keep looking, I've got plenty of time!
