Swimming Lessons

Anyone plan on or already doing swimming lessons with their LO?? I'd really like to get into some this winter, but I was wondering if I should wait until a certain age (like 6 mos actual or 6 mos adjusted). I will probably ask her dr if it's okay, but jw if you ladies have done this or are planning on doing it :)

Re: Swimming Lessons

  • I really want to do some, but I don't want to take him around that many kids just yet. Maybe next year when he can have a flu shot.

  • I was planning on starting her in Jan when she's 6 mos actual and can get the flu shot, and was looking into the mommy and me classes during the day during the week when there won't be that many kids there, if any at all, so almost like a private lesson. I am just such a big advocate of kids knowing how to float/swim and be able to do so safely and naturally so if they are ever in a situation, they will be okay. And also learning as early as possible, so I really want to start DD asap!
  • I would probably wait until at least after RSV season. It is a great idea though! I am sure she will be a great water bug!

  • I really want to as well, especially since they just built a brand new natatorium out here, but I think we'll probably end up waiting until flu/RSV season is over.  DH was a swim coach so we are big on learning how to swim early too :)

  • If you can get into a chlorine free/ saltwater pool, I say do a mommy and me class.  Lots of fun, and before 18 months you really just want your LO to get comfortable in the water.

The concern before 6 montsh adjusted is that babies cant regulate their temps liek we can, so my pedi had us wait til 6 months adjusted. BUT, all the pools here are outside.  Before that we practiced swimming in the bathtub.

  • Yeah the place I am looking at is indoor and has a saltwater pool. Good things to keep in mind for sure! Thanks Ladies!
  • I considered signing DD up for swimming lessons, but in our community they have the same class for ages 6mos through around 3 years!  I plan to wait until she's a bit older just so she doesn't get bored doing the same class for a long time.  In the meantime, I've taken her a few times to the pool at my sister's apartment building.  There usually aren't many other people there and it's getting her used to the water.
