Pottytraining

any tips/tricks?  On the radio the other day they gave some stat that 95% or so of 18 month olds in the 1950s were pottytrained, compared to around 37% now

Re: Pottytraining

  • The first trick is to make sure they are ready. You know they are physcially ready if their diaper stays dry during their nap every day.I was told this by our ped and our parent educator. Secondly, they have to have an interest.

My son was potty trained in 2 days flat. It was  SO easy because he was ready. When I say potty trained, I mean he did not wet the bed at night, never slept in pull ups and goes poop and pee on the potty by himself and wipes himself. He was two and a half.

I took him to the store and let him pick out underwear about 2 weeks before we began. I made a big deal about them and he was super excited. When we were ready to begin, I was off work, so we didn't leave the house. He was in underwear only, NO PULL UPS. They are a glorified diapers. I set a timer for every 30 minutes the first day and had him try to go. We made it into a game. Nomatter if he went or not, I praised him immensenly. The second day, it was every hour.  If he had an accident (which he did twice those two days), I didn't make it into a big deal and said it happens but next time you feel that, go to to potty. The third day, he went on his own and literally hasn't had an accident since. When he "graduated" from potty training, I let him go to Toys r Us and pick out a toy for all of his hard work.

The key is not to push it until they are ready. Most boys aren't potty trained until after 3 (girls are usually around  2) but some kids are ready before then. If it's a struggle, stop and try again in a few months.

  • This might be kinda obvious, and it might not apply to G once you start, but no more onesies!  When I worked at a DC some of the parents with 2 yo's who wanted us to work with their kids on potty-training still sent them to school in a onesie.  I'm not sure how long kids can fit into them or for what ages they make them, but they are not potty-friendly.  The kid can't unbutton them and when they're on the potty the back end would dip into the toilet water if you didn't hold it up.  Gross!

LOL, so yeah, it's better to wear big kid clothes when using the big kid potty.  :)

  • Thanks ladies, great tips!
  • Cheerios in the toilet!

    Good luck Wendy!

  • I've always heard that cloth diapered babies PT earlier so that's probably why the stat is like that.  Something to do with the fact that they can feel the wetness in cloth but disposable diapers wick it away.

Good luck!  I can't believe Gavin is already big enough to start PTing!

  • I did the same thing as Amber. I put Ian in underwear and took a couple of changes of clothes with me everywhere. You have to make sure he is ready and make a HUGE deal about him wearing undies makes him a big boy. Good luck!

Haha Ashley...NO!  He LOVES Cheerios.  This would just make him want to eat out of the toilet!
