Transition from bottle to sippy cup...

I need some advice...

Annabelle is currently drinking two bottles (one in the morning and one before bed time). At daycare I pack a sippy cup with whole milk. I spoke with the DCP and Annabelle doesn't just down the milk, she usually takes her sweet old time through out the day. We tried milk in the sippy right before bed and she usually gets really mad and cries for her bottle.

What should I do? Our Pedi wants her to be transitioned over to sippy by her next appointment. I still have a few months.

  • Jen, I don't really understand what the problem is?  She's drinking the sippy at daycare slowly?  Plus having an morning and nighttime bottle?  I think keep it up w/ teh daycare sippy of milk, even if she's slow.  Re the am bottle, I would try to replacing that with a sippy or just cutting it out altogether.  Ella has a small sippy of milk (2-4 oz) and a few bites of rice cakes when she first wakes up.  As for the nighttime bottle, she'll drop it when she's ready.  You might want to try getting her to eat a little more at dinner or lunch or afternoon snack so she's not hungry then, but eh - if she still has a bedtime bottle @ 18 mos - so what?  Ella dropped hers around 14/15 months.  One night I just realized she wasn't drinking it, just playing with it, so I took it out and put her to bed.  She didn't miss a beat.

  • I'd love to see if anyone has any advice.  DD will not drink milk from a sippy. I've tried numerous kinds of different cups and even cups with a straw but she will only drink milk out of a bottle.  At this point I figured if it is the only way to get her to drink milk then so be but hopefully soon we can wean her off the bottles.
  • Okay, I'm glad I'm not alone. I'll try introducing the sippy cup in the morning and in the evening before bed again. My DCP was like, she'll drink it, but not like the other kids, who down their milk.

  • DS had a nightime bottle until he was 18 months.  Dropped it when he didn't want it anymore.  It was a slow transition dropping different bottles over time...nighttime was the last.  When she is ready, she will let you know.

  • At 12 months, we cut the am bottle. Daycare had been working with her on the sippy cup with just water for several months because she wasn't drinking anything out of it. When I cut the morning bottle, she started drinking more out of the sippy. Out of necessity, I think. So, right now she is only getting a bedtime bottle and 2 sippys of milk at daycare. I struggle with these "milestones" too. But, she really will pick it up. I always have to tell myself things like " well, she probably isn't going to be 16, drinking out of a baby bottle. Just keep trying and you will get through it.

  • This may or may not help, but we use a different cup for milk than we do for water.  For water, he was using the Tommee Tippee 9+ cups, but suddenly he has a love for straw cups, so that's all we give him.  For milk, we use the Gerber hard spout cups.  Try some different combinations of cups, she'll lose the bottle eventually.
