I almost passed out this morning....

So I have strep for like the billionth time this year so I am off of work. I don't feel terribly bad, just tired and uncomfortable so I dropped off my son at preschool. I decided to go get my blood work done for IVF. They need to take 4 BIG vials of blood for infectious disease testing before we begin.

So at first, she couldn't find a vein, which is strange because I have never had a problem before. Once she found one, she had to keep kneading my arm out to fill up the 4 vials. It literally took almost 10 minutes, Towards the end, I started feeling really hot and that I had to lay down. The lady looked at me and says "Uh oh" and takes the needle out and reclines it and forces me to drink orange juice. Then I hear her yelling "Someone get a doctor in here, she's going to pass out". Apparently, my lips and hands lost all color. These people come and throw cold rags on my head and keep telling me to drink juice. After 5 minutes, I finally felt better. 15 minutes later they let me leave.

What a fun experience. I can't wait to go back there every other day for 2 weeks for bloodwork. If I am freaking out about giving blood, then how the hell am I going to give myself shots every day? Plus, I'm going to have to bring my son every other day to these appointments. He is going to freak out if I get sick again. Lovely. Can I can fast forward to the part where they tell me I'm pregnant please?

  • Try not to be so hard on yourself.  That sounds pretty traumatic honestly.  If you need more blood work drawn, I would try to drink a glass of water at least 30 min before you go because it plumps up your veins and makes it easier for them to find them.  Also if someone has stuck you more than once and still having problems, you can always ask for someone else to take the sample.  If they get pissed then so be it.  It's a patient right honestly.  I can't believe they had to milk it out.  I'm surprised that she didn't just tell you to go drink some water and try again in 20 min.  My mom is a RN and she hates hearing stories like yours (not the passing out part but what the person taking the blood did).  It's not at all surprising that you had an issue with the situation.

I had someone tell me that I had hard to find veins a few months ago which I found amusing since that's the only time I've ever been told that.  I had another nurse come in the room a few min later (I was being admitted for observation late in my pregnancy) and tell me my veins looked fine and pointed out 3 or 4 different places where they could have put the IV or taken blood work.  So sometimes it's just person dependent.

Good luck with the IVF!  Sending you lots of hugs and vibes!

  • Ugh, that sucks!

I nearly passed out while having blood drawn during my physical when I got hired at my job. I was dumb and hadn't drank anything that morning before going. I remember starting to feel dizzy and saying "I don't feel so great". The nurse had me lean over but that didn't help so she moved me to the exam table to lay down. I was so dizzy I couldn't see anything as she led me to the table. I was so embarrassed.

I hope this is the only time this happens for you!

  • Well from the old pro who has had more needle sticks than I thought possible and usually they can't find veins on me, here's some tricks.  Drink water...lots of it in the morning before you go.  It plumps up the veins and seems to make it go faster.  Secondly, they only take 1 vial usually so no worries on that.  Third, eat breakfast before you go.  And last look away and sing a stupid song in your head.  I know its dumb but it works for me.  I'm sure we could do a daily post of the most annoying songs we can think of so you'll have plenty in mind before you go.  ;)  The tech will think you're nuts, but hey what's a little crazy when you're sticking yourself with needles daily!
