High-Risk Pregnancy

question from a GD newbie...

i was dx last friday and have been monitoring my sugars 4x/day since monday...my question is, so far all of them have been w/in normal parameters.  is this typical?  obviously it's a good thing but i'm wondering if i can anticipate this to continue or if things could get worse yet?  i know that everyone is different but i'd like to hear some other experiences.

Re: question from a GD newbie...

  • Im in week 2 of monitoring, 4x/day as well.  All of my numbers were very good, except my fasting number first thing in the morning.  Come to find out my 3 hour test fasting was 98, they like 95.  All of the others were great numbers...it was just the fasting that threw it off.

From what I have read perusing this board it seems to get worse as you progress in your pregnancy.  There are some great ladies on here though to get advice and answers though.

    Good Luck!!

  • my fasting #s are always the lowest of the day!  i passed that test on my 3 hr.  i guess i will just hope for the best and wait and see!
  • I have weeks where my numbers are harder to control.  I've also had to steadily increase my insulin at night because my fasting #'s keep creeping up.

  • I have been monitoring for 7 weeks now and all mine have been in normal parameters with the exception of 2 which were slightly elevated during a time of extreme stress.  I am 36 weeks now and my #'s aren't any higher than they were @ 29 weeks, so hopefully your experience is the same.
  • I've been monitoring for 8 or so weeks now.  I'm completely diet controlled at this point.  My fasting numbers have been well below the max 95.  My 2 hr post meal numbers vary with what I eat and how much exercise I get after eating.  Generally they within range.  Occasionally (no more than twice a week) I go over my 120 max, but I know why and how to avoid it.  I find that if I take a short walk after I eat lunch or dinner it helps keep my numbers down.  Depending on what my dinner number is, I allow myself some ice cream or other treat for my bedtime snack.

So far, my GD experience has been better than I thought it was going to be. LO is doing well and is target for normal on time delivery...so far.  Good luck and be sure to use the boards for advice and support.

  • My numbers were fantastic until I got to about 36 weeks.  That's when I really had to be careful with everything I ate.  I was diet-controlled the entire time.

  • My endocrinologist said there is a big change that occurs ~ 34 weeks where it often becomes harder to control.  I test 7x a day and my fasting numbers have been high, so have been on long-acting insulin for several weeks... that said, my Dr wants my fasting #'s below 90 and they're usually 91-95, so other Dr's may have said they are always within range.

7x a day!  Your doc must be in the pockets of the meter companies!  Those little testing strips are like $1 each and you throw them away.  Yikes!  I hope you have good insurance, cuz I'd go broke testing 7x a day.
