Anyone ever have thrush?

I'm trying to figure out what's going on.  The last few days one nipple hurts so bad when dd latches on, like needles are piercing it.  The pain is momentary and I can nurse, but the nipple tip is painful to the touch.   No cracking or bleeding.  The other nipple is perfectly fine.

Someone on breastfeeding board suggested thrush.  Dd has white on her tongue, but doc said last time it was milk.  I haven't really checked her mouth lately, but I will in the morning.  She has, however, been battling what looks like is a yeast diaper rash (red dots on more than just her privates).

Could this be thrush?  Do I need to see a doc or will it go away on its own?

Re: Anyone ever have thrush?

  • When I had thrush it started in DS as a yeast diaper rash. Our pedi suggested Lotriman (sp?) and it went away only to come back worse about 2 weeks later. That is when I felt the symtoms in my breast and he had white spots on his inner cheeks. Sounds like thrush to me, but I would see the dr and get the good medicine 1st and not waste my time on the otc stuff.

  • That does sound like thrush. Have you been on antibiotics lately? That was what caused mine.

I would go to the doctor. I got nystatin cream for me and stuff for Sadie's mouth (I think it was also nystatin?) Also you'll want to feed her yogurt and culturelle. Good luck! It's kind of a PITA, sorry you're dealing with it!

  • Also, my pedi told me I would not need to put anything on my nipples and it started a vicious cycle of me just giving it back to him and so on. So I would ask a lactations spec what you could put on your nipples to help.

  • I've had it twice.  I called the pedi and they had me give DS Nystatin, and called the OB for me and they put me on Diflucan for 2 weeks.  You can try an antifungal cream like Monistat or Lotrimin on your nipple, but if your LO has it in her mouth y'all will just keep passing it back and forth.

  • When we had it, DS had very obvious white patches in his mouth (along the inside of his cheeks).  I didn't have any pain or bleeding, but I was super itchy and peeled a lot.  DS was on nystatin and I was told to apply some to me too. It eventually went away.

  • Definitely sounds like thrush to me - Matthew had it a few times when he was little and I remember the pain from breastfeeding was just like you described! My doctor prescribed Nystatin and I was to give it to Matthew orally, rub it on my nipples, and then use Lotrimin on his bottom... it took a good week or so but it completely worked! The advice my Dr gave us that saved us after the first time around... keep using the medication for a couple days AFTER everything clears up, that way you know for sure its gone. We would stop when it looked like it was gone and then within a couple days it would be back and worse than before. Good luck!
  • That sounds like thrush to me. I felt so bad, I didn't realize that DS had it until I had it too and it was hurting to nurse. We went to the doctor and she gave me a script for Diflucan (oral) and a script for DS of Nystatin.

ETA: Here is a post from Sharra711. She posted on the BF board a lot when I was there. This was super helpful for us in getting rid of the thrush for good. (I never tried the Genetion Violet though, I heard it stains everything) HTH

    imageSharra711:
Mix 1TBSP white vinegar to 1 cup H2O and wash nips after each feed (make new batch each night)

Change nursing pads every feed, wash everything boobs come into contact with every day in warm water.

Boil bottles/nips/pump parts for 20 min with vinegar each day.

Use the Nystatin 2X a day and get a tube of Monistat to use on the effected area + 1" extra.

    Do all this for 2+weeks

Or..... go and get some Gentian Violet from Walgreens and be done in like 4 days.
