Hospital bag/baby firsts/PP care

Someone posted this over on 3rd Tri and I thought I'd share it over here as well!  It definitely seems to sum everything up!

  • This list is a bit overkill IMHO.  What hospital doesn't provide towels?  That seems odd to me but maybe it's just the hospitals I've dealt with.  Personal care items (like shampoo) are definitely dependent on the hospital.  My mom wanted to get a dry shampoo kit for me but the hospital didn't offer it (her hospital that she works at does have them though).  So that might be worth picking up if you end up not taking a shower in the hospital.  I didn't take a shower in part because I didn't feel good because of elevated blood pressure and as much as I wanted to wash my hair I didn't take a shower after my c-section, just waited until I got home and felt a bit better (within 24 hours).

I would also recommend taking hydrogel pads if you're breast feeding.  Personally I LOVED the Ameda pads and hated the Medela pads (who wants to clean their nipples before feeding baby if you don't have to).  Also the Ameda pads aren't sticky like the Medela pads (which means you need to have a bra of some kind on, camisole with shelf bra would be fine) but because there's no sticky then they last longer.  Most people I've talked to get 4-5 days out of them.  They are available at BRU.

Remember anything they give you in the hospital they charge you for so if you can take it with you.  I was charged for a tube of lanolin (forgot to pack it) that was double the price I would have paid at Target.  So if you get something (like the bottle for cleaning up after your delivery regardless of c-section or vaginal birth) ask if you can take it home.  More than likely they will tell you that you are charged for it anyway so take it because it will just be thrown away.  If my mom wasn't a nurse I wouldn't know it ahead of time.  HTH!

  • I think its over kill as well, but the towels at my hospital were more like hand towels and they only provided soap (but I had my own toiletries).
